Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

In these "Vh'izing Originals" lessons I want to not only teach you some Van Halen go to techniques, sounds, and arrangements, but I also want you to understand that the VH guitar style can be a creative spring-board and is transferable into any style your want, hopefully your own style of course..  It's not about the Phase 90 or the Flanger, it's about the approach to the fretboard.  Van Halen takes a very free spirited approach to music, this allows for a limitless creative process.  My hope for these lessons as we embark on this series of original Van Halen influenced materials is that you not only learn some cool riffs and solos to impress your friends with but also you take the creative process I'm going to talk a lot about on the video lessons and in the lesson text and run with it to create your own music.

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Song Intro

This intro part
is a free flowing dynamic lead.  My suggestion is you learn it slow first then work it up to speed.  Not because it's
overly difficult but more so you can memorize the patterns and techniques.

Main Theme Riffing - Version #1

This riff is a classic VH style sideways groove..
The trick with these riffs is to be a slick and smooth with the pull-offs and slide-ins as you can...  See video for demo and explanation..  We also change sounds here to the later era Chorused VH tone..

Main Theme Riffing - Version #2

Version 2 of the main theme riffing has an almost half-time feel to it.
It's less of a sideways groove and more of a down-beat groove..  The riffing itself utilizes some classic VH power chord and open string techniques.  See video for tips on how to control string ring-out with a riff like this, where only some of the open strings are supposed to ring-out...

Out sound goes back to the early Phase 90 tone for this riffing..

*solo begins here

SOLO

The solo for this track opens with a unique chord change to the song.
It's similar in vibe to "Secrets" off Diver Down, which is kind of the approach I took to beginning the solo..  From there the solo is done over the Main Theme Riff version 1 and ends with our intro chord hits with a couple extra power chords thrown in at the end for drama..

On the video lesson I'll go over the leads and techniques, but I will also go over the rhythm under the solo, so you're clear on what you're soloing over as that's where the real lesson is...  However the chord names or riffing you're soloing over is specified above the lead tabs below for reference...

Our solo switches back to the classic Phase 90 tone for its sound..

Final Ending - Main Theme Riffing Version #2 - EXTENDED

The final ending leaves us in the early Phase 90 tone
and is an extended version of the Main Theme Riff Version 2.  There are 2 guitar parts here.  The 2 guitars are tabbed separately and color coded...  Take note that guitar 2's ending lead, is both fast and melodic.  Make note of what specific unison bends are being done by guitar 2 to end the song and how they may relate to the riffing that guitar 1 is doing..  There's a great VH lesson there should you choose to take it...
