Lesson introduction by Jeff Fiorentino

This is our 3rd annual installment of "Van Zeppelin".
Which of course we incorporate into our ever popular Vh'izing cover songs guitar lesson series each year around this time..

This year we took a "what if" Van Halen-style approach to the Zeppelin classic "Dazed & Confused" from Zep 1..  As with most Vh'ized covers we do here at JFRocks.com for lessons I've done a totally re-write of the song and even added new riffs where there were none before..  We have key changes that Zeppelin doesn't have, we have a more late era VH inspired interlude and solo and of course a VH sound..

For this song, the guitar is tuned to a 1/2 step flat tuning, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb, however not unlike part 20, Boston's "More than a feeling",
the bass is tuned to a 1/2 step flat tuning with a Dropped D, Db, Eb, Ab, Gb..  This comes in most handy for fattening up the bass, but also for the interlude and solo which move from the key of E minor to the key of D minor..  As with the Zeppelin song there is a strong Phrygian & Dorian mode influence at play here.  Phrygian being the minor scale with a flattened 2nd, so for E minor it's, E, F, G, A, B, C, D.  And Dorian being the minor scale with a Major 6th, E, F#, G, A, B, C#, D

Please listen to the song example a few times before diving into the guitar tabs below and the video lesson.  And also of course please read any and all lesson notes written above the tabs.  They are an important part of the lesson and will help you understand the tabs better, as Van Halen style things aren't always easy to translate into either standard notation or tab...  Above all have fun with this.  We did, so you should too.  It's really about a learning experience for you, and to give you some ideas of how you can do more with the Van Halen guitar style than just blow through Van Halen songs..  Understand the style and you can understand how to improvise within it and even incorporate it into your own playing style in spots..

Pre-Solo Interlude

The interlude drops our key to D minor..
The bass is pretty much just driving an open low D..  Or D flat pitch-wise since we're tuned 1/2 step flat..  The solo comes out of this interlude and is basically over a D minor7 with the bass doing a riff..  That's about it rhythmically as far as the bass goes.

See video for help, there is some very tricky stuff in here not the least of which is the interlude riffing itself..   Also note the equipment used in the pictures because we do change Flanger sounds..  From light to Unchained EVH type sounds..

*Lighter Flanger setting (NON EVH SWITCH) is used.  See Setup page and Video Lesson for explanation.

*Interlude Riff..  It's imperative that you play it as tabbed.  VH loves to jump around with riffs to use the different tones possible on different strings.
This riff is as   VH as VH gets..

*Apply a slight palm mute to the whole riff please..

a.h scream = Artificial harmonic scream.  A scream is more pronounced than a regular artificial harmonic.  Usually for Van Halen you rake into screams, such as is done with the scream below and for example for the opening scream on "Good Enough" off 5150..  See video lesson for tips & help..

Post Solo Riff

This is a riff modeled after a similar beat that ends the solo in Dazed and Confused.
However the beat and sound have been modified for VH of course, and the result is a very Fools / Romeo Delight / Women & Children in general kind of thing..  Watch the timing on this it's trickier than it sounds.  It's actually a mix of 4/4 and 5/4 time..

Chorus #3

Not much different from any other choruses
so it's not re-tabbed..  See final Bridge and Outro below..  Make note that we switch back to light Flanger sound for the chorus though, then back to a non-flanged Phase 90 sound for the bridge..  Then back to Flanger on an EVH setting for the outro...

*Lighter Flanger setting (NON EVH SWITCH) is used.  See Setup page and Video Lesson for explanation.

Outro / Final Ending

We take a VH style approach to the final ending of Dazed & Confused, which is a back and forth between an F and an E basically..
As usual with our Vh'izing stuff we end on a tension note/chord which is not too different really from the Zeppelin version in this case..   Make note that the sound changes again.  Now we're using the same EVH Unchained Flanger style sound that we used for the second part of the Pre-solo riff, just before the solo came in.  We also leave the Phase 90, because it was on anyway when we did the final bridge.  Vh often used the Phaser and Flanger together as is evident when you listen to the MP3 for this lesson.  Meaning, it's a sound you've heard before..  And this is how you get it...
