Lesson Introduction from Jeff Fiorentino

Our lesson track for part 25 in our Vh'izing cover songs series is an VH style adaptation of The Cars classic "Let the Good Times Roll".  This track is a great example of 2 guitar VH style band dynamic in that the 2 guitar parts alternate back and forth
between riffing and chords.

The track features a new arrangement from the original song, as well as new riffing.  The idea as always is to make things your own, and that's something VH did with every cover song they ever did a version of.  The solo is over an extended version of the verse, bridge, and chorus parts and demonstrates (intentionally on my part) many elements of the VH guitar style including speed runs, whammy bar work, and most important, single note manipulation.  The principle of every note matters is something VH's dad pounded in his head, and it's something that I pound into all of your heads on every single lesson on JFRocks.com.  As with trying to figure out VH songs, our solo for this track has parts where you think it's the same note being played, but it isn't, it's another note bent and manipulated to match the note that came before it utilizing what we always call around here, "sick bends"..  Obviously we'll get into more detail on these topics and more on the video guitar lesson for this track..

All this being said, please listen to this lesson's song example a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson so that you can get the absolute most out of this guitar lesson.

Enjoy the lesson and as always CRANK IT UP!!

Song Intro

This intro part
is a free flowing dynamic tap pattern that crosses strings and positions.  My suggestion is you learn it slow first
then work it up to speed.  Not because it's overly difficult but more so you can memorize the patterns.

Guitar 1 = Black Tab
Guitar 2 = Blue Tab

h(19) = Tap harmonic, tapped on the 19th fret.

-7
= hammer onto the 7th fret from nowhere.  Just hammer on to sound out the pitch.

Main Song Kick in - Verse Main Theme Riffing

The key element at play here is the dynamic between the two guitar parts and the bass.
Guitar 1 is the primary guitar part, but as the verse gets going it's guitar 2 and the bass that are really creating the groove.  Be sure to learn both guitar parts so that you get the full lesson here, which isn't just a Van Halen style lesson, it's also a song arranging 101 lesson as well.

Guitar 1 - Left Speaker - Be sure and apply a palm mute to the B5 chord hits in the main riffing..

Bridge #1

The bridge is a simple G to A chord change in the original Cars version.
We've done the same chord change here but added a RWTD solo style Vh influence arpeggio riff to spice it up a bit...

Chorus #1

The chorus re-uses the intro riff technique for guitar 1 and is a B, G, E chord change..
Guitar 2 plays riffing similar to that of the verse.  See tabs below..  Note also that Chorus #1 is shorter than chorus's 2 or 3..

Verse #2

Verse 2 has a longer say on the "A5" chord change to allow for some VH style fill riffs..
Vocally this would be great for a DLR type who could do his trademarked screams and stretch out the actual vocals over the guitar fills..  It's not uncommon when you're making a song your own to do what you like with it, it's not just a good VH lesson, it's a good lesson in song adaptation as well..
