Lesson
notes by Jeff Fiorentino
This time around with Songwriting Part 4
we're covering song adaptation. Song adaptation aside from being
an important skill that any working studio guitarist needs to do well is
also a great practice exercise for anyone who plays guitar and wants to come
up with original material. Reworking songs gives you a better
understanding of the original song and of song structure and instrument
dynamic within a song.. Granted I do this all day long for our "Vh'izing
cover songs" series, but that's mostly for Van Halen purposes.. This
lesson deals more with changing genres of music. In the case of our
example song, "The Devil Went Out To Los Angeles", we're adapting a Southern
style Country influenced Rock piece, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", to a
more hard Rock 80's Hair Band, Neo-Classical genre of things..
On the video lesson we'll cover the details of this song and how it
all fits together and exactly what was done to adapt the original C.D.B.
piece.. However in the tabs for our example track please pay close
attention to the interaction of the various guitar parts.. Also as
always be sure to listen to our example song a few times BEFORE diving into
the lesson tabs and video.. You really will get more out of it that
way as there is a very important guitar lesson at play here.. That is
unless you want to just mindlessly play cover songs all day long like a
Parrot saying hello.. Hey to each his own, but 99% of the JFRocks.com
audience has no interest in such frivolous guitar playing and with that I
think this is again as I said a very important guitar lesson and skill have
as a guitarist, even if you're never leaving your basement or garage..

Main
Song Kick in / Main Theme Riff
This is a rocked adaptation of the Charlie Daniels
riff. The feel has been changed slightly
however the bass aside from having a dropped D tuning stays true to the riffs
Southern Country roots..

Both Guitars 1 and 2
play the riff. - See video for a note about the ending/verse lead in
for this riff however..

Verse Parts
The 2 verse parts are both the same for the most part on this track, so they're
only tabbed once.. Again we're taking the Southern version and Rocking
it up by using the Open Low D to drive with one guitar, while guitar 2 does a
modified double stop version of the song's "Interlude" part.. Again as I
teach often with songwriting, you can come up with new parts to songs simply by
re-working parts you've already come up with.. My god bands like Van Halen
and Led Zeppelin lived by this little songwriting gem of wisdom... LOL..

**After the first round of
Verse the song goes back into the main theme riff and then back around again
for another Verse. After that Verse we go directly into
the Chorus which is tabbed below.
Chorus
The chorus part is a mix of 2 guitars playing melody
and 1 guitar playing a power chorded up chunked
out rhythm which has been mixed to the left speaker to allow it to stand out
and give some power and balls to the chorus...
The tabs are color coded. Keep in mind that guitars 2 and 3 play the same
thing and guitar 1 is the rhythm..

Pre-Solo Interlude - Interlude #1
This semi-clean chorused out interlude is
based on an actual part from the original song, however from there we go
into a more rock/neo-classical section, all the while the Bass is taking us back
and forth between Southern and Northern... See video for added lesson and
tips on what I mean by all that..

Use a clean or semi-clean amp sound.. No distortion on this part..
Both Guitars 1 and 2 play the riff.

Interlude Part 2 - Pre-Solo
This part takes and ROCKS out the interlude Bass line from the original song
with a flanged out version, then morphs into a power chord version of the riff
as the solo begins to enter.. See video for added tips..

Both Guitars 1 and 2 play the riff.

SOLO
The main solo is done of the root chord pattern, (Dm
to C) of our main theme riff.. The bass
keeps a very Southern style groove going, while the rhythm guitar chunks out
power chords rock style. Meanwhile the leads are a mix of Southern style
taken from the Fiddle leads in the original song, and some Neo-Classical
techniques and styles taken from 80's Hair Bands and that guy with the
Stratocaster who dressed like a space alien from the 17th Century..
Granted it's a tricky solo but I wanted to give you some ideas of what you can
do with any Country song if you want to make it more Rock oriented.. Van
Halen doesn't always translate well to Country but the Neo-Classical style and
arpeggio riffs in general often do translate nicely.. If you're going to
learn this solo, learn it slow first to memorize the notes as there is some
jumping around due the necessity of repeating certain pitches in different
positions, which by the way is not only common to Neo-Classical guitar playing
but also Country and Bluegrass pickin' as well..

*The
chord names are written above the tabs so that you know what you're soloing over..
It's basically a D5 or Dm to a C5 or C...

Post Solo Interlude - Interlude #2 -
(Key Changes to D Major)
This is simply a more rocked out version of many of the things going on with
the original song.. However some of the Country aspects have been
re-phrased to work better in the Rock format we're in..
NOTE: The key
change to D Major is only for this one part of the song. The entire
rest of the song is in D minor..

Guitar 1:
Main Rhythm. This is the riffing that comes in between the leads..
Note we're using the "Mixolydian" mode of
our D Major key by having a "C" in it.
