Lesson Notes by Jeff Fiorentino

This is our 3rd annual "festive" Halloween guitar lesson here on JFRocks.com..
I can't even believe it's Halloween 2010 to be honest, I guess it's true what they say, time flies when you're having fun.  These and the Holiday lessons and music we do around Christmas time are a blast to do and I always try to lighten up a little on the theory lessons at the end of the year, and this year is no exception..

This is just a fun "Surf ROCK" rewrite of the classic "Munsters" TV show theme..  While the root of our example song "Surfing with MUNSTERS" is based on the Munsters theme, I've taken this track in some new directions using some of the techniques I've tried to teach here on JFRocks.com throughout this year.  The number 1 technique to look out for is "riff embellishment"..  Which occurs both in the lead and rhythm parts.  In the case of the rhythms, I've altered them from the original "Munsters" theme in an effort to make it more modern sounding, and less old surf, and also to of course make it into a JFRocks/Jeff Fiorentino song piece, and not just a rehash of the "Munsters" TV show theme..

The actual "Munsters" theme is a very fast paced almost cartoon-like surf piece..  I've slowed our example down a bit, and added some harmonizing to the riff as well as a new rhythm guitar part that's more 80's metal than it is 60's surf..

The solo is simply a fun example of what you can do with the classic "Surf" music scale that's in play throughout this song.  We'll talk about the sound on the video lesson, because it's unmistakably "Fender Twin", or I should say "Twang", but the scale in use for both the solos and the entire song really is a combination of a couple modes.  It's actually a pretty big scale that affords you lots of soloing and riffing freedom..  It's a mix of "Harmonic minor", & "Aeolian" with a Major 3rd  & a flat 5th added to it..  So in our key of "E minor" the scale in use is made up of 10 tones (pitches), E, F#, G, G#, A, Bb, B, C, D, D#.

Just keep those pitches in mind as you mess with the jam tracks and hopefully try to create your own riffing off of my ideas..

As always be sure to listen to the lesson's song example track a few times before diving into the tabs and video lesson.  You really will get more out of it that way..  And it goes without saying but have a fun and safe Halloween..  I hope everyone enjoys this year's Halloween inspired lesson...

Pre-Kick in

This is a Horror Surf thing that's done fairly clean as far as the leads go, but the guitar 3 rhythm part has some extra overdrive on it..
Be sure your reverb is cranked for it..

Bridge

This part is a mellow out before the solo...
The chord pattern used by the rhythm guitar was created using the pitches from the scale I gave in the introduction notes...  I suggest learning both parts so you understand more about what's going on...

SOLO

Rather than go all Horror with the solo, I thought I would take things in a late 60's surf rock Blues Fusion direction..
This solo uses all of the notes from the scale I gave in the opening notes of this lesson, you can embellish at will and have some fun with it...

The sound it gets comes from the mix of the Fender Twin's built in overdrive sound, and the Ibanez Tube Screamer together..  You can also get this same sound on any amp by hooking up a Wah pedal and depressing it partially (usually about half way but Wah's vary) that partial depress will give you the super mid-range whine I'm getting...

The solo itself is over a simple riff..  I'll show you the riff on the video lesson..  Basically it's all just over an E minor if I had to pick a chord...

Em  ...* Chord implied by bass, guitar plays an Em riff.  See video lesson for exact rhythm under the solo..
