Lesson Notes by Jeff Fiorentino:

This is a very important guitar lesson for anyone who wants to understand rock music, and write songs...  The Beatles changed everything as far as song composition goes in Rock music.  No lesson on the Beatles would be a good lesson unless it talked about the orchestration of the song and how the various instruments work together..

For this lesson I've taken a Beatles (Harrison technically) classic from the Abbey Road album called, "Something", and re-worked it a bit using the same type of orchestration between the guitars and bass to create our track, "Something in the way they write", which is as the title would suggest what this lesson is about..

Most people who write rock songs were influenced by the Beatles whether they realize it or not.  Some people will say, they don't care for the Beatles, and yet they write a rock song with multi-level guitar parts and walking Bass lines.  Granted, that's a simplistic explanation of how the Beatles influenced Rock music, but none the less that person who said they didn't like the Beatles should at the very least thank them and respect them, because without the Beatles they might not have orchestrated and arranged their song quite the same..

On this lesson we're going do a walk through of the song example, which is very close to how the actual Beatles "Something" song goes with only minor alterations here and there.  However as we walk through the track I'm going to point out what the different guitar parts are doing, and how the Bass is interacting with them.

As always please listen to the lesson's song example track a few times before you dive into the Tabs and Video lesson.  There are many little things at play here including pickup changes and the way the 3 main guitars interact, so please read all the lesson notes in the tabs, and use the tips I give on the video lesson as a way to better understand it all.

Chorus - Key change from "C" to "A"

This is a big 4 guitar part chorus, however guitar's 1 and 2 play the same thing.
So I've tabbed it as guitar 1, 2 and 3.  See video lesson for tips..  I added a guitar 3 part doing the melody to keep everyone clear on where we are in the song.  This type of guitar dynamic is something the Beatles really brought to rock music..

Heavier guitar sound on guitar's 2 and 3.  Guitar 1 is still semi clean..

Guitar 1 & 2: Main Strumming Rhythm part - Guitar 1 clean, guitar 2 with some overdrive..

SOLO

The last part of the tabs is the solo, since the song pretty much just repeats out after it...  With the solo I've done some traditional Beatles things, and some non traditional that still fit..  The first part of the solo is over the verse and bridge of the song..  The second part kicks up and is done over the chorus with a riffed out chorus melody..  I do this in part to try to give you some cool ideas of things you can do with your own song melodies or any covers you might do..

The first half of the solo that's over the verse and bridge has some analog delay on it.  Analog delay is great for 60's sounds..  The second half that's over the chorus has no delay and is a slightly more overdriven sound..

Moderately clean sound with mild delay..  see settings page.
