Intro
Be as smooth as you
can with this, take it slow at first to learn the pattern. This is a great
left hand strength builder. There are
NO OPEN STRINGS in this tap
sequence. Be sure you get a good grip on the fret board, you don't want to
loose position or have your hand accidentally fall.
** The very opening
is a simulation of a starter cranking over. A starter with a lot of
reverb, (hint for Kelly there) lol. It was done by scraping the side of
the pick up and down like a Violin bow on the 6th string up by the neck of the
guitar. You will also want to apply a slight side to side motion but not
much. Most of the motion is just up and down. Be sure to mute the
string or deaden the 6th string with your left or fretting hand as you don't
want it to ring out. **
Tapping begins on the
2nd set of cymbal hits. So start your slide down opening just before the
Cymbal hits come around. See video for help with this tap sequence and
also some helpful tips on doing this and other tap sequences like it.

Ending of tapping
This is tricky and
will take some practice but once you get the pattern and technique down it's not
that hard. This should have a fluid trickle down effect.

Ending
chord sequence
This occurs,
pre-interlude throughout the track. It's not tricky but you do need to be
sure to get the timing right on it or else you'll end too quickly. Notice
the spacing I put between the ending notes on the 6th string. Spacing
shows feel.

Interlude
I did this riff
with a clean setting on the amp and a low reverb setting. Very dead
almost. I used a Strat on the front pickup only.
Use your fingers
for this (thumb and index finger will do). Be subtle with the ending hit
on the 3rd fret 6th string. It's an important part of the riff but if you
emphasize it too much by hitting it too hard it will also ruin the riff.
Those of you who play rag time jazzy time stuff will have no problem with this
riff, it has a similar "swing" feel to it. The riff itself is simply the
main riff an octave higher up for the most part, again a similar theme to VH's
HFTeach.
I strongly suggest
the playing this in the position I did which is tabbed below. If you have
trouble with the stretch you can move the riff up the fret board and do it off
the 5th and 4th strings at the 7th fret. However, it will not sound the
same, it won't have the same trebly kind of sound.

Solo
This solo is pure
improv. Of course it's inspired by and is supposed to sound like the HFTeach solo, it is in no way the solo. It only utilizes the same scales
used and even 1 that was not technically used by Ed has been thrown in.
This is yet again proof that VH is really a style of playing. It's a way
of approaching the guitar. It makes no difference what notes I hit or in
what order I hit them in. What does make a difference is HOW I attack or
approach those notes. Every note is important, but the catch is you can't
think about it too much.
** I tabbed a very
accurate representation of the solo I played on the mp3. Please note that
on the video I may alter some parts slightly as the solo I played on the mp3 was
improvised on the spot. If given another take to do it in, certain parts
would sound the same and other parts would sound different. This style of
playing is often improvised in the lead department and this is why you have live
versions and studio versions of things. It's also why basing how someone
like Ed did something in the studio by watching what he's doing live is not a
very good way to do things 9 times out of 10.**

The open string in the pull off speed
part is slightly palm muted. It's there as an accent note. I
tabbed a literal translation of what I played. My suggestion to you is
learn the pattern and be loose with it. Notes without dashes between them
are to be picked. Notes with dashes between them are pull offs.

Scale up
section
This just like the
opening of the solo is a Basic A Major scale. However, the Bass is driving
an F# for this so technically we're doing F#m here and starting on the A or the
minor 3rd of the F#. Again, probably way to technical of an analysis for
VH style, so lets just say it sounded cool and leave it at that. lol
