Intro

See video for performance tips.  Flanger settings are given at the top of this page in the setup section.

Blue highlight = Flanger in use

Flanger tip:  Use the side of your pick to palm mute the open string or strings indicated in blue Highlight.  With the side of your pick palm mute the note starting between your bridge and neck pickup and move incrementally with each hit toward the neck of your guitar.  You do not need to do an actual string scrape.  This is a misconception about this trick but it is another trick for another song on another day called the "Cradle will Drop."  This UNTAMED Unchained Flanger scrape thing is only a slight pick scrape.  If you don't have a Flanger you can do the same trick but you'll need to apply a deeper pick scrape to it to get it to sound close to the real thing.

Chord names below may not line up properly because everything is a / something.  The chords to the main riff are listed below for easier reading.

Verse Riff #1

The idea of this type of riffing is to noodle around the vocals.

Chorus Riff

The chorus riff might sound like the intro riff to many of you, but in fact it's different.  The intro riff is more rigid with less hammering on and more individual chord hit picking.

By contrast the chorus riff on this track is done smoother with more hammering on.  These minor variations in riffs are one of the subtle things you should look for in this style of guitar playing.

Verse Riff #2

Similar to verse 1 but with slight variation.  I could lie and say it was intentional but the truth is it came around while we were rolling and I forgot what I did the first time so I just made something up that was close to what I did.

This type of thing is very common in this VH guitar style.  Your Van Halen CDs are loaded with mistakes and screw ups that the band just left.  That attitude is part of what makes this guitar style so much fun and why I enjoy it too.

I don't go out of my way to fix any Vin Heuton mistakes.  That's part of what makes the Vin Heuton stuff workas VH style lessons.  What you hear is what really happened.  In a lot of cases the mistakes, define this VH guitar style.

Solo

This solo makes up the other lesson here besides picking technique and flow.  This solo is an example of a quirky little VH style thing.  The trick to doing solos like this off the top of your head is remembering a couple things.

1.  Don't think about it too much

2.  Know the chords you're soloing over.  In our case here it's "G" to "A".  So I'm using both G positions and A positions.  Basically G pentatonic minor and A pentatonic minor, BUT, see tip #3 below for more on this...

3.  Stay in scale but use the notes in chromatic sequence that are in between the scale notes to add personality to your phrasing sections.

4.  Finally, remember to break things up and put them into phrasing sections.  These types of solos have defined sections.  It doesn't all just blend together.  Put some personality behind it all.

This solo is over the bridge.  It's the same chord feel and groove that the bridge has and the same basic chords.  However in the case of the solo the Bass is mostly focusing on the main root note G and A.  I've written those basic chords above the tabs below.

**Solo begins with bar depresses slightly**  there are no effects used in this solo.  no Flanger, no phaser, just a stright up brown sound.

Interlude

Ahh the sutble art of key modulation.  This is the break in the song.  The calm in the eye of the hurricane.  This section in both my song UNTAMED and VH's tune Unchained is done with the Phase 90.  The phase 90 has a very distinct sound and it works well for parts like this.

There are 2 guitar parts to this.  I overdubbed in Guitar 2.  Guitar 1 has no effect on it and is just hitting the root chord of the whole thing.

Guitar 1:  Let chord ring out lightly strumming it a second time as it fades.

Outro Chorus and leads

Guitar 1:  Guitar 1 is just the chorus with a new ending.  It's a doubled chorus but we have a go back on itself ending followed by chord hits and a chord ring out to end the song.  Below is the tab for Guitar 1.  Guitar 2's tab which is leads that come in for the second part of this ending chorus is tabbed separately.

Guitar 2 the lead portion of this ending

This part, not unlike Unchained's ending was added later as an overdub.  If you are 1 guitar in a live setting you would want to do the ending leads instead of the Guitar 1 part.  People associate certain things and these sorts of ending outro leads are very important to the songs.  This is classic Pentatonic minor ending for Fair Warning era.
