Intro/Main Theme Riffing

This is really a super embellished version of the round and round riff.
 I've mixed it up based on what I hear that's VH'y when I listen to the actual Round and Round song.  What I hear is a mix of Panama, Dance the night away, and Unchained.  So I've incorporated the properties and techniques of each of those into this whole song track.

Verse 1

The verse parts are a mix of things.  The Bass plays an important role here as well.  For the single note riffing the Bass is thumping with quarter notes, or one hit per beat.  For the chord sections the Bass is driving eight notes or 2 hits per beat..

Bridge

This is a classic VH style bridge for this sort of song.  It's very similar to what Ratt is doing on their track, BUT I've changed the ending portions of the riffing to include more open string ring out and fluctuation.  Similar to the transition riff in Panama but with the C# thrown in, instead of the B that's done in Panama.  Reason being is we're off of an "A" type chord here and not a "B" or "E" type thing.

Fill #1

See video for help reading and performing this fill.
It's a mix of 2 tap and cross over between tapped notes and fretted notes.  It's more Vito Bratta than Van Halen, but it's also a good innovation technique off of some of the fills done on Van Halen II and "You're no good".

Solo

Remember both the rhythm under the solo and the leads are equally important..  Knowing what you're soloing over will enable to you write music of your own, or even jam and improvise leads.  I've transcribed both the Rhythm and the leads here.

The solo is a mock up of what VH might do with this sort of chord pattern.  The Rhythm under the solo has also been VH'ized, and I've played the same chords as the Round and Round solo, but in less of a Hair Band from the 80's way, and more of a later VH "Balance" era style of riffing.

Either way you slice it, both the rhythm and the leads to this track are a great lesson.

* //// = Trem or speed picking

The scale is an "E minor" scale over an "A Major" chord in the rhythm.  This could also be viewed as an "A Dorian" scale if you like.  Either way make a mental note of it for jam sessions of your own.  It's a classic VH scale to use over an "A" chord..

Post solo stop Riff

This riff is an Embellishment of the chords that make up the main riff in Round and Round.  I took the chords and applied a Panama like feel to them, and basically turned the chord shapes used by Ratt into VH style double stop riffing.  It's a pretty cool riff, but I think probably a little tough to pick up by ear, so be sure to see the tabs below for help with it if you're doing some ear training practice with this song...

Outro Chorus Riffing

This is a basic chorus with outro leads during the second half and final ending.  I've tabbed the rhythms and leads separate because the I wrote a traditional style VH ending for this track.  An rhythm ending more like what VH might do with a song like this.  Inspired by Unchained of course, but take note of how I used the chords from the riffing to create a new feel that ties in well with the rest of the track..
