Intro

This chord riffing is the actual chords used in the very opening of Dear Prudence transposed into more Halen-like chord shapes. (except for the first "G/D" chord which is a power chord substitution)  We'll cover this on the video lesson, but again doing a VH'ized cover means understanding how VH plays.  Vh never does a cover song just like the original version.  Things are always boiled down into what he likes to do, and how he plays...

Don't forget that we're using a "Dropped" or "Drop D" tuning.  Our lowest 6th string is tuned down 1 step from an "E" to a "D".  Technically we're also tuned 1/2 step flat to begin with, so it's really a classic Fair Warning era style "Flat tuning with a Dropped D."

Intro theme riff

This riff is loosely based on the actual verse/main chord pattern in Dear Prudence.  I've exploded the chords and riffed it out VH style, using the Flanger as a nice accent..  Take note of the "F#'s" in this riff.  The F# in the actual Prudence chord pattern remains constant, so I've made sure that it's a constant in our riffing as well.  We'll talk about and I'll demonstrate what's going on here on the video lesson.

Play this riff loosely, but you'll need to be quick to do it.  It's not as simple as it looks.  The 76bpm metronome setting is a bit mis-leading.  This riff is basically a double time feel of that.

Main Verse Riffing

What I've done here with this riffing is take the Bass line that the Beatles do as their kick in and turned it into a slightly embellished Flanged out guitar riff...  On a more subtle note the bass is driving during the first part of it, and during the second part of it as the guitar riffing gets more fancy, the Bass is doing the actual Beatles bass line.

There's always more going on than what meets the eye with a song.  A song is the sum of its parts, and it sounds the way it does because of what ALL of the instruments are doing individually, and not just what the guitar is doing.  This is something that's often missed by guitarists because we're usually too busy trying to listen to, or figure out the guitar parts that we miss, or sometimes don't even think about what's going on in the big picture that's making a song, or part of a song come across the way it does..

Solo

This solo is a mockup of the secrets solo in places.  But mostly it's just improv over a D to Am7 to C chord change.  This is a VH'ized chord version of the same chord change that occurs during the "Dear Prudence" interlude portion.

Flanger settings change here.  Leave all the settings the same as the rest of the song, but turn the Regen down to 0.

Post solo riffing break

This is a VH style version of the very same chord riff break that occurs in the Beatles version of "Dear Prudence".  Make no bones about it, if you understand the style of VH and the chords and timing that he likes to use, you can make riffs like this all day long out of ANY of your favorite songs.  Take note of the chords and timing...  On the video lesson we'll talk about what's going on here and compare it to the original chord shapes used by the Beatles...

Outro riffing - (lead/main guitar part)

I've only tabbed the outro lead portions below.  The rhythm guitar is simply running through the main power chords of the song, similar to what is done in the second part of our intro.  I'll show you what I mean on the video.  For now, please view the tabs below..  I've incorporated many classic VH patterns here, mostly from the Balance era with a pinch of Poundcake thrown in for good measure...

Simply a classic VH style ending.
We re-do part of our intro kick in riff, and add what I like to call a fade out exit riff..
