Jeff's Lesson Notes

"Mausoleum"
(Website version)

This is Vin Heuton's answer to Cathedral.  This uses all of the techniques utilized by VH in his Cathedral solo BUT, I add in a few things that he does not.  Including, pull offs to open on occasion and also other doubling effects to blend with the delay.  Mainly an Octave lower doubling.  What this does is create a multi stringed instrument effect.

This is a good lesson in embellishing or expanding on a technique that a given player does.  Many people play Cathedral and never move beyond it.  When in reality if you use what Ed did in Cathedral as inspiration, you can launch into a whole symphony orchestra with one guitar and a couple cheap pedals.  LOL

Digital delay is needed for this and is the only necessary thing although as with Cathedral (lesson no longer on the site for legal reasons) I suggested using compression to help with the tone and even things out and that suggestion remains for this little piece as well.

On the video I will perform Mausoleum for you and also give you some tips on technique.  This will help you with Ed's Cathedral as well but more importantly and what I hope is that it inspires people to innovate and go outside the box a little with things and not be so confined to regurgitating cover songs exactly the way a given artist did them.

This is a Skill Level 6 on the VH 1 to 10 scale of things.

Scales and chords in play - A little VH style Dropped D 101

This is a semi chromatic scale.  It's a good one to use when working with Drop D and doing VH stuff.  A lot of times VH mixes scales.  The two below are two common ones you can use the notes from to either form solos or rhythm patterns in D or Dm with a VH vibe to them.

** Some notes repeat and some do not.  I'm giving you the best notes to use on each string as an individual string not so much a scale form that you practice. **

E_______________________________________________0_1_2_3_4_5_7_8_10_12 13___
B_______________________________________0_1_3_5___________________________
G_______________________________0_2_4_5___________________________________
D______________________0_2_3_5____________________________________________
A______________0_2_3_5____________________________________________________
D__0_1_2_3_4_5____________________________________________________________

Another scale, parts of this scale can be seen in things like the solo to Secrets for example.

E__________________________7_8_10______________________
B___________________6_8_10_____________________________
G_____________5_7_9____________________________________
D_______5_7_9__________________________________________
A_5_7_9________________________________________________
D______________________________________________________

And another common one.  Sort of a I'll wait kind of scale up section feel.

Chord forms and double stops.

I've only given you the shapes here.  These can be slid around the fret board.  Position dictates the pitch.  D, C, Bb etc.
