Main Riff / Chorus

This is another one of those riffs you need to break up in your head for it to sound right.  Each part is an individual little thought.  Be sure to apply some rests, it doesn't just all blend together.

Tab below is simplified for ease of reading.  See video for help with actual phrasing which involves a couple subtle slide ins and mutes.

You can do anything here.  You can go out of key, you can drop the guitar, you can trip and fall on stage and still a cool sounding thing will more than likely happen.  It doesn't matter, below is what I did on my take 1 nightmare or sounds.

Bridge

There are two of these in this track.  This the First one is 4/4 time.  At the end of the song we do a Bridge in 3/4 time.

This one is easier because it's 4/4, it leads into the solo.

Solo

This solo is really over just 2 chords and a scale up at the end.  For 90% of this solo the D chord is held.  So most of it is just the bass driving a D, then it goes to an E for the ending part of the last measure and repeats.

These types of chord patterns are actually tough to solo over.  It's very easy to make the solo sound boring.  You'll notice in Everybody wants some Ed is simply doing a scale down with feel and some whammy bar.  This is because having only one chord at this tempo is very limiting in a lot of ways.  This style of playing likes chord changes and lots of them.

I chose to go both the scale down and scale up route but I also threw in a phrasing section.  This phrasing section is simply a little 9 tone scale with some personality to it and a slick little speed run toward the end.  Nothing major but it does help to brighten up what would normally be a very mundane chord pattern for a solo.

** Open string at the end of the line below comes just before the speed picked run.  It's an accidental hit.  I meant to dive bomb the open 3rd string pre-speed run, however my hand didn't have a good enough grip on the fret board.  This kind of stuff happens all the time with this style of playing and usually it's just fine to leave the screw up. **

Back into a Main Riff chorus and then into the Interlude below

Interlude

As with the verse anything goes here.  I've incorporated some common tricks for this style.  Also one of the tricks is a recording trick.  Basically it's the big growl just before the chord hits come in or the growling I should say.  It's a stereo reverb trick where you double the recording and have it bounce off of itself.  It sort of plays ping pong between right and left speaker.  We did this with the big feedback scream during the opening of the track as well.

More detail and help will be given on the video lesson for this track.  There's only so much I can type to try to explain all this stuff.

Back around into Main Riffing chorus not much different from the others and into outro Bridge

Outro Bridge

As I stated earlier on this page, this is 3/4 time this time around.  The other bridge was 4/4 time.  This is a tricky ending because you have to be sure and get your head around the time change up.

**Special note**  Please follow the tabs below and not what I did on the video lesson playing along with this part.  The A part starts with the A chord and your pinky on the 5th fret 2nd string.  I had forgotten I had done that for this part.  On the video I just did it going from Bm to plain old A.  Either way sounds good so either play what I did on the vid or if you want you can do what is actually on the mp3 which is tabbed below.
