As usual with any VH'izing cover songs piece some re-write or
rearrangement is involved... In the case of "Fur Elise" the
original from Beethoven is typically written out (transcribed) in 3/8 time..
To add a Van Halen-style element of drama I did both the intro and outro in
4/4 time with embellished / free time riffing versions of the actual main
theme riff of the piece...
This time element is important for you to know because if you don't, the jam
tracks will drive you crazy and you'll be totally lost in spots or at least
way behind...
For comparison the original mp3 for Beethoven's version is available for you
do download and listen to on the song mp3 page for this lesson.. I
have not provided tabs for the original Beethoven piece because they are
owned by a publishing company that well let's just say keeps "tabs" on
JFRocks.com LOL.. I would rather not poke the bear so to speak, but
you can find tabs for "Fur Elise" with a simple search of the internet...
On the video lesson I'll show you some comparisons to the original and our
Van Halen-style version... And of course I'll also give you some added
lesson tips and a walk through of my song sections.. If nothing else
there is a hell of a Van Halen Technique and song structure lesson here that
should suit any skill level from beginner to advanced...
Being able to turn Classical pieces into Rock isn't as easy as it may seem..
It's not just a matter of turning everything into a power chord and putting
driving bass on it... As with any vh'izing piece, or any version of a
song you yourself may create, it really boils down to understanding at least
at a fundamental level the theory behind the original... That's done
using some of the same techniques I talk about on "Soloing
101 Part Deux", with analysis of the modal structure of the original
piece so you understand how it flows..
Because this lesson is about VH there was some re-writing and re-working of
certain sections as I've stated, but that needed to happen in order to jive
with the VH guitar style and writing style for that matter... For
example altered single note riffs from the original Beethoven version into
open string ring out riffs and half step intervals that ring together to
create an almost Panama lead in riff effect... The other part we
altered was the solo.. Though technically I left in the original
interlude from "Fur Elise" and worked it into VH style rhythm riffing with
an expressive VH lead instead of the trip to the circus effect Beethoven
used on his interlude.. The original Beethoven interlude part works
for piano and even on guitar as a neo-classical thing, but not so much for
VH, I didn't feel it was what they might do with a song like "Fur Elise", so
I took the solo in the direction I felt they "might" hypothetically take
it.. What's really important with it is the change from A minor and
"E" Based riffing to an "F" to "C" based section.. Most of "Fur Elise"
has a Locrian element to it with the "Eb" in the opener, and a "Harmonic
minor" element to it with the use of the "E" Major, so taking the interlude
to an "F" minor based section with, "F", "C", and "Eb" is not only a killer
use of theory on Beethoven's part, it sounds really cool as a rock lead as
well...

SOLO
This is a very abstract, what I call "conversational" VH style solo....
It's over a part in the Beethoven track that goes to an almost circus theme
feel.. I kept the root chords pretty much the same and even kept the basic
feel the same, I simply did VH style rhythm riffing, typical of what VH might
play over a solo section like this..... I added chorus to the guitar
to give the leads an OU812 type sound... I could have kept the original
melody, however it didn't jive with the VH guitar style 100% and when I heard
the rhythm I felt the leads should be looser and almost speak... These are
always my favorite type of VH style leads anyway..

This is a pretty involved VH style outro, but the
chords under it all are the same ending the Beethoven track has...
The difference is, since this is VH style, we're not
going to do arpeggios in a classical way but rather in a Van Halen way..
But we we end up with I think is equally as cool, and frankly these free time
endings are what I always loved about Van Halen anyway...
