Key of E minor
The Phase 90 is always on for this song track.
It was used more heavily on the solo part by enhancing the reverb during mix
down.. However, the phaser is used for the rhythms of this track on a
light setting of 33% speed and in the FX loop, NOT ON THE FLOOR!! This
gives a more authentic VH tone for most in studio recording applications.
It's not the best choice for live shows. For live stuff I would keep
the Phase 90 on the floor in front of the amp...
* Also featured are the Green
Kramer and Marshall JCM 800. Those are used by Erica for the secondary
guitar parts....

Full Band Kick in / Verse part -
Key of E Major
This section of song demonstrates the drama of this piece. Now we move
to what would be the verse of the song itself.. We've gone from our intro
in E minor, to E Major here. This gives a very subtle dramatic effect...
Note also that guitar 2's rhythm riff is different... The chord pattern
for the actual "My favorite things" song incorporates an E Major to E Maj 9
chord change here with a transition to an A to A6 chord change.. I've
basically done the same sort of thing but twisted the Jazz chords into Van Halen
style rhythm riffing... Take note also for lesson purposes of what the
bass is doing throughout this track. As I've talked about in lessons
like Songwriting part 2, what the bass is doing can shape the whole song..
The bass is really setting the vibe here...
Note also that the basic lead riffing of guitar 1 hasn't changed much in
pitches.. Just the phrasing. But yet the dramatic effect is again be
caused by guitar 2's rhythm being Major now instead of minor... These
Major to minor and back again transitions occur throughout this song track and
are an important element to both my arrangement here.. And the original
"Rodgers and Hammerstein" piece...

The rhythm and feel change a bit for the solo..
I'm doing the leads over what is the Bridge of
the original song... But I've changed the chord pattern just a pinch to
jive with Van Halen a bit more... There's a slight off beat here, so keep
the solo quirky as I did if you make up your own over the Jam Track provided
with this lesson... This solo reverts back to E minor just for
reference...

The sound comes from from the phase 90 being plugged into the FX loop of my
Crate GFX 212. The Marshall was used by Erica to play the rhythm riffing..
You'll hear it clearly on the Jam Track.. She's also using my Green Kramer
Baretta... For the leads we added some reverb in mix down to help give it
that early VH vibe...

Take special note of the color
coded guitar parts here.. Guitar 2's riff keeps the solo Phase 90 setting
on and is in your Left speaker.. It's a smokin' little riff that'll be a
blast to jam along with.. Technically both guitars are doing leads
here. Toward the end everything comes together... Really we're just
riffing out the vocal melody of the song.
But doing it Van Halen style doesn't just mean with a Phase 90 or a VH sound..
We could have done this clean and it would have still sounded VH'y... It's
about having fun with the music, leaving mistakes, and not worrying about the
next note... My tip for the jam track is to just go with it.. Have
some fun with this stuff...
