much the way Eruption is. There is no right or wrong way to play it.
I doubt I ever played it the same way twice in the years that this has existed
but some things in it much like Eruption are a set theme such as the tapping or
the middle portion just before the tapping. This lesson is about
application of Ed's techniques and remember this is all in good fun. But
it should be fun for some of you to work out.
Part 1
MXR Phase 90
in use
by itself with light compression throughout
until the pre-tapping section
where I mix Flanger and Phaser together so they sort of blend and create a rich
effect.
Be loose with it this is
free time and in 3 keys. G, G minor
& A. Blending of keys in solos like this is very common for VH to
do but I doubt he thinks about it anymore than I did. Everything in this
solo is stuff that Ed would do. It's all based around the scales and
chords and patterns that he likes to use. This solo is a goldmine of
information and a great example of doing your own live VH sounding solo.
Always inject a bit of
yourself into it though. Without personality this piece doesn't work,
neither does Ed's Eruption for that matter.

Palm mute slightly most
notes are picked or speed picked. This technique I'm using is more the
early bootleg live VH kind of thing. If you have any bootlegs of VH doing
Eruption like pre VH 1 you hear a lot of speed picking in those early solos.

Phaser only
This will require a bit
more endurance than Eruption's tap sequence but the theme is approx. the same.
This was my tapping warm up for many years. Do this to feel don't worry
about how many times I do it. Who cares. It's about the flow.
But I did give you the counts I do below for reference.
Rarely have I ever done
this tapping the same way twice, sometimes I extend it, sometimes I shorten it,
you can apply what ever feel you want to it.
Do 10x means to do a certain tap section
10 times
All counts are 98% accurate. I personally would never
do this the same way twice but I wanted to give you a tab with the counts I felt
when I recorded this. It's free time and it flows along. If you only
feel each set of taps 8 times then you do it 8 times. I'm doing a mix of
odd and evens. That's how I tend to fee tap sequences and it's sort of the
same effect that Ed got in Eruption as well. Some of the tapping in
Eruption for example are odd counts.
