Jeff's Lesson Notes
"Eviction"
(Simpler website version)
This is a Vin Heuton classic. Actually it used to be my VH warm up and its been around for years. I've only just recently named it Eviction for the sake of calling it something.
This is however an excellent lesson in mixing VH style techniques to form a solo. I've always found it silly that people can't play VH stuff unless they know a VH song. Especially something like Eruption which is so free time and even in the studio version has errors that they left that VH himself did not intend to do.
This EVICTION solo from our fictitious band Vin Heuton is a little bit more difficult in spots than Eruption is but that's mostly because of endurance and the tapping portion at the end is a little longer and more involved than the tapping that Mr. VH does in Eruption. Beyond that it uses all of the same types of techniques and even a couple from Spanish fly are thrown in for good measure. This is more of a live version type VH style thing than a studio version.
This should be enjoyable for most of you to try to learn and also a great learning experience as well. You can do anything you want and make your own solos like this all day long by spotting the patterns at work and understanding that there are no rules. Even stuff that doesn't sound good per say by itself in the context of this solo actually works. If you start something with no rules you need to continue that theme all the way through it otherwise the audience will disconnect.
I hope everyone takes a try at EVICTION and also
takes it with a sense of humor and grain of salt. No I don't think I'm
Eddie V.H.. But for this lesson, I consider myself an actor playing
Eddie V.H.. I'm sure Edward would do far more justice to EVICTION than I
ever could. This is all for lesson purposes only and in good fun.
Also be aware that on the video lesson for this I will point out the VH
patterns. The idea here is for you to learn from these things I give you
and understand the patterns at work so you can sound like VH if you want to and
even if like me it's a cheap imitation at best. Eddie is an amazing player
with an amazing ear and I'm sure he would wipe the floor with any of us on a bad
day but we can try to understand how he plays to try to improve our own playing.
We should also try to embellish on how Mr. VH plays and try to innovate off of
it. But before we can do that an understanding of the patterns and scales
and riffs used by the man is essential. Enjoy...
