Intro
The intro to this song is just a really loose almost interpretative
stand alone section of the chorus, verse, and bridge chord pattern to the
song. The band kicks in at the first chorus.
The very opening of the song was just a made up part. I needed some
filler for the intro, so I just did a classic VH picked chord / harmonic
riff.. They're fun to do and always sound pretty good no matter what
chord pattern you're using..
Be sure to not allow ANY ring out of the strings. You don't
necessarily want to mute the notes, but you do want to control them.
If they get away from you, the MXR Flanger will make you pay for that
mistake dearly by feedbacking them in most cases.... lol

Even
looser with this part... Be sure to keep count or you will get lost...
But this should have a free time feel. Edward is always very good about
playing free time but staying in time. I know that sounds like a bit of an
oxymoron, but that's just how it is. I've done my best to show a good
example of that here with this stand alone pre-kick in bridge. It all
sounds very loose and random, but if you come in at the wrong time with a
harmonic or bend etc. you're screwed..

Full Band Kick in - Chorus #2
This is the mildest of the post kick in choruses.. This song builds
and builds as we go through it. The final chorus is huge, the second to
final chorus is not quite as huge. It's that sort of drama that I talk
about a lot on my songwriting lessons and other song based lessons.. This
is the same sort of thing that White Lion does on their track. By the time
you get to the last chorus it's a symphony for god's sake.. This is VH
style, so we do outro leads.. Either way our song builds..

This is similar to what was done before the band kicked in for the 1st verse

without the band was more interpretive and loose..

All I've done here is taken the bridge that White Lion does and turned into
free-style Van Halen style riffing. I'm doing this very loosely without
worrying too much about what the next note will be.

Solo
This is a very laid back
rendition of Eddie VH tearing into an E minor scale after listening to When
the children cry. I added some light classic script logo Phase 90 to this
to help warm it up and make it sound like it came off of Van Halen 1 a little
bit. Just for fun of course... See video for help with these leads.
I did a lot of slick VH riffing that I would normally leave out of these lessons
because it's confusing. But I was having some fun recording this, so I
went with it...

**Script
logo model classic Phase 90 from 1970's was used for this.
DD3 delay was used for the opening harmonic only.. !!! 50% level, 1
repeat, and about 370 milliseconds time..
NOTE: This solo has no guitar under it... Just
bass... It's over the Verse chord pattern... See chords
written above the tabs..

all chord names are implied by bass )

sequences below are very staggered and random. Exactly the opposite of
anything Vito Bratta would do. Which is kind of cool in a way, because
it's fun to blend Vito and Eddie. Eddie is very free time, and Vito is the
human metronome. If you can blend elements of their styles together as I
have on this track, you can have a ton of fun with this stuff..

The outro is in true VH form. It's a doubled up chorus part with leads
over both halves. What I've done with this too is change the drums and
bass up for the 2nd half of this. Again bringing things to a BIG ending..

Script logo Phase 90 Outro solo
Probably my favorite effect in the history of guitar.
This solo is Van Halen 1 inspired in it's scale
use. It's a mix of I'm the one and Feel your love tonight basically..

**Script
logo model classic Phase 90 from 1970's was used for this solo. The pedal
has been around my house since the 70's, it used to belong to my dad. Its
got a sound like no other phase 90 I've ever hooked up, so I keep it around.
I fear the day it breaks on me though, so I don't use it too often.. ...
