Intro

This is a pick scrape trick.  On the song track I recorded it twice to give it a doubled two guitar effect.

Leave the 6th string open.  DO NOT MUTE IT !!  Use the side of your pick in a violin bow motion with a slight sideways scrape.  Start at the neck pickup and move back toward the bridge then back toward the neck again.

Main Theme Riff

There are 2 riffs going on here at the same time.  Each one compliments the other.  The end result is the feel that you hear on the mp3.  If you are 1 guitar in a live setting for a riff like this, you would want to do a combination of guitar 1 and guitar 2 in order to give the listener the right experience.

Guitar 1 is tabbed in Black and is in the Right speaker.  It has no effects on it.

Guitar 2 is tabbed in Blue and has Flanger on it.  That Flanger is very important.

Guitar 3 is in Green and is doing a trem picked pattern.  The intro trem picked pattern differs from others in the song.  Guitar 3 has Flanger on it.

** This riff is only tabbed once here in these tabs.  However there are other guitar parts that make vaiations on what happens with this riffing and those parts are tabbed and explained as you through the song and the video lesson.

Verse 1

There are two guitar parts for the verse.  Guitar 1 is doing chord hits and guitar 2 is doing a melody.   If you were 1 guitar doing this by yourself you would do both parts.  You would do a chord hit then do the melody.   See video for added lesson.

Notice for your own edification the chord change here.  This is a dramatic change in chord pattern.  We go from a chord pattern built around, A, G, D to an F to Eb chord pattern.

Chorus Riff

This riff is  the main theme riff.  The only difference is what Guitar 3 in Green is doing this time.  This time Guitar 3 is still trem picking the 10th fret 2nd string, but it's also accenting the D/A power chord at the end of the Main theme riff.

See video for help with this chorus part.  Or just read the note above.

Verse 2

Same sort of deal as Verse 1.  Verse 2 has two guitar parts.  This time though, we're doing a C to F chord pattern.  This type of song writing technique can help make a song that has a simple root chord pattern sound more complex than it actually is.  This is a good skill to take with you when writing your own music.

Guitar 1:  Let chords ring out.

Do the double stops with your fingers.  Use your thumb and index finger to lightly pluck both strings at the same time.

The next main riff is the same as the Chorus already covered so I won't tab it again.

Solo #1

This style of solo is tricky.  It's over a weird chord pattern and it has an odd feel to it as far as what the drums are doing.  The beats are not standard on the beat sort of things.  I should know, I programmed them.  lol

On the video I will give you a very good lesson on this type of soloing and how to play this particular solo as well.  The best tip I can give you is get into a groove with the drums.  You have to pay attention but not too much.  This isn't supposed to be counted out like some guitar lesson.  It should flow naturally or as naturally as possible anyway.

Bass under the solo:  It's important to know what you're soloing over.  Below is the bass part.

Final Solo 1 ending

This is a tricky little thing, more Vito Bratta than Vh as far as the technique I used to do it.  Either way it's a nice ending for this solo and it works nicely with the C, Bb, G#, Bass line that's under it.

See video for help

Version 1:  The easier way doing a hammer on to the 16th fret 2nd string.  The 13th fret in italic at the beginning of the measure, means to anchor your left (or fretting) hand on the 13th fret.  You'll want it there as that's where you'll be pulling off to.  Ideally try to use either your index finger or middle finger for that 13th fret.  Do not sound it out though, the first thing that sounds out is the 18th fret 2nd string bent tap.  The 13th fret, like I said, is just an anchor and a pull off point.

Solo #2

This solo is over the main riffing pattern.  Pretty straight up Chuck Berry style with a VH twist.  Again, as always see the video for help with the techniques used to perform the various sections of these leads.

Tap portion

Some of these are sick bends.  Sick bends are under bends.  Lack of precision is part of the key to making this sound right.  When you release bends, don't release them all the way.  Leave them bent slightly, that's another tip.

From here it's ending chorus riffing.  The final chorus is exactly the same as Chorus # 2 so I will not tab it again.   There is a Guitar 4 part that comes in toward the end for the last 12 measures of song or so and riffs around the main riff.  The tabs for the Guitar 4 part are below.

Ending Chorus

Guitar 4:  Comes in about the last 12 measures of the song.  This is a good example of W/Ch, Fair Warning era ending outro riffing.  Usually this riffing is a lead done in the form of either an altered main riff to a song (such as below) or, it's just chord hits that work with the riffing.  Either way the riff below is a great lesson in this sort of thing and I encourage everyone to embellish on it and try different things with it.

This Guitar part contains Flanger
