Jeff's Lesson Notes

"Clean Streets Interlude"
(Website version)

We're going to go back to a little Vin Heuton track called "Clean Street" for this lesson and we're going to take a look at what I like to call the V.H. Interlude about nothing.

What mean by Interlude about nothing is usually these are small sections of song that get you geared up for the solo or they come out of the solo to take you down a little bit.  They're mood setters.  Sometimes they're funky, and sometimes they're mellow and other times they can just be something weird.

It doesn't make too much difference what you do per say although generally these interludes go back to the main key the given song is in if they come out of a solo that modulates in key.  Or, if they occur before the solo they may themselves modulate in key (not always though as is the case here with this example) Either way the mood of the interlude is generally a separate thought from the main song although as is the case with Mean Street and here with Clean Street the interlude is along the same funky vibe as the main song but the beat changes into a more off set stop and go sort of thing to get the listener pumped for the solo.

I chose to do this interlude because some of you have requested lessons on Funky chunky kind of playing.  While this doesn't use the weird 9ths and 13th chords etc. often utilized in Funk music because it's VH style based it is great practice for your right hand or picking hand for Funky playing.  And what your picking hand is doing with funky stuff is probably more important than what your left is doing anyway.  Although technically for Funky stuff the two hands must work together.  We did cover right and left hand muting in a previous Vin Heuton lesson.

For now, until I get a Funk lesson up familiarize yourself with this little ditty.  Clean Street will appear on a future Vin Heuton CD but for now we're just working with the White meat of it as a site lesson.

Pay close attention to the tips I give about the subtle muting going on.  It's important or else the feel will get lost and it will all just mush together into one big piece of crap.
