Intro

Be very loose with this intro. Flanger may be substituted for Phaser if you like. I tried both and thought the Phaser sounded warmer, which is the case in many instances.

*Remember our low 6th string is tuned to a "C" for this song. This the Vin Heuton version of the classic "Drop D" tuning. We call it "Drop C". For those new here, we also use drop D on other songs. This is just a fun little twist on it. Just for your own edification, the 6th string on most standard scale guitars can be tuned as low as "A" but generally "B" is as low as most players go with it.

Main kick in / theme riff

The main riff weaves around the guitar 2 power chords. In the original Stones version of this track, they do a chord riff using the same basic chord pattern. While VH likes chord riffs, if you can hear a single note groove in there it's usually a safe bet to add it if you're going for a VH style effect.

Guitar 1 = Black TAB and is the main riffing guitar part

Guitar 2 = Blue TAB and is the rhythm guitar under the riffing

Guitar 1 - Be sure to slightly palm mute the accent hits on the 6th string. Also apply some semi-harmonic to these notes.

Guitar 2 chords

These are the chords that guitar 2 is doing under the riffing above. See video for help with these, but I think most of you will get the idea. It's a good idea to note the position change on the "Ab", and "Bb" as it comes around again. This is a good thing to do to your rhythm guitar parts. It's a subtle way to trick your listeners into thinking that more of a change has occurred in a part that didn't actually change very much at all as it came around.

Verse #1

Now the verses in this song of course have been written to allow for vocals. These are not only VH lessons, but also song structure lessons as well. The verse riffing in actual VH songs is sometimes overlooked. There is actually riffing going on in most cases under the verse parts, and it's not always what people think is cool and want to learn, but you should learn it in my opinion. You riff under vocals and still keep it interesting. The verses on this track are very indicitive of what a player like VH might write for a cover of a song like this.

Solo

This is a standard VH style solo. It's sort of a cross between a couple classic VH solos moved to the key we're in. In our key of "C minor" we're soloing over the main theme riff's chord pattern, which is, Eb, C, Ab, Bb, C. Having many chord changes makes for a lot of different moods your solo can take on. I went with a relatively happy mood, but on the jam track you can do what ever you like. I chose to use scales common to VH for this one of course... Use it as a guideline, or learn it, what ever you want to do..
