Intro
Most of this track including the intro has been totally rewritten using the
VH guitar style to modify the Chuck Berry guitar style.
Double stops have been changed, and riffing and scale patterns have been
altered as well... Basically what I'm saying is this is a whole new
song... But it's a great example of what I like to call using the VH
guitar style in a sentence... We're creating with techniques that
Eddie made famous....
Play this loosely.... (see setup notes below please!)
 This is the setup used throughout
the track... The Phaser is ALWAYS on despite me teaching you never
to do that for the best sound... For Van Halen 1 type sound
application it's a good idea to leave some light phasing on. However I
teach people NOT to do that because every time I've heard them do it it's
gone wrong and they have too much Phaser, so to protect people from
themselves I suggest only using the phaser for leads and fills...
However, if you're going to try to use the phaser all of the time I suggest
running it in the FX loop of your amplifier.. This will give you the
warmer more subdued phasing that you're looking for with a Van Halen 1 type
sound.... If you must run the phaser in front the amp on the floor
like most people, I suggest that you set the speed very slow. My trick
is to set it about 8 o'clock on the speed dial... If in the FX Loop
set it for 10 or 11 o'clock for the ideal Van Halen 1 type phasing..
Before someone emails in or comments in some forum somewhere out there
disagreeing with the sound you can get putting the phaser in the FX loop.
Please remember the proof is in the pudding. I give you a song
track to hear what it sounds like in the real world... There are no
tricks on the recording.. It's just an amp, a mic and a couple fools
in a studio with too much time on their hands... LOL... And in
the case of this track way too much sugar too....
Have fun with this.... And remember to have fun playing guitar...
That's what it's all about.... Ultimately set things up the way YOU
get the best sound at YOUR house. I'm simply telling you what I did so
as to avoid 1000 emails from people asking me what I did to get the sound.

open strings and screaming unison bends etc.... Watch the timing on

Not that this song needs a solo as it's all soloing for the most part anyway
but this is again a VH style take on the Chuck Berry lead break in Johnny B.
Goode.. Equipped with the opening stop hits and all... I added a
little Vh tension to it and some extra reverb.. I also turned up the speed
on the phaser from about 10 o'clock to a little past 11 o'clock.. With the
extra reverb the slight kick up in phaser speed seems to work out nicely..
Just a tip, take it for what it's worth...

Interlude
This is really just a break
down.. It was supposed to have vocals on it... But well one
thing let to another and that got botched so I ended up just punching in some
guitar... Imagine a DLR type singer doing some sort of off the cuff vocal
thing and you'll get the idea...
The guitar lesson point is is to notice that we've dropped things down the "G"
or the minor 7th of our key. Our whole song here pretty much deals with A
Mixolydian mode which would an A scale with a G in it instead of a G#.. So
there's your tie in... Notice also the use of chromatic and semi-chromatic
intervals in the rhythms... This ties in with what I talked about on the
Jazz part 2 lesson on the JFRocks lessons page on the main website....

Final Ending
This is a classic style semi-chromatic VH song ending... It's a mix of
me, and some Edward stuff.. On the Edward side it has a bit of Women in
Love going on with it... On the me side, it's not as straight forward as
it sounds... There are some other accents besides open strings in here....
Take note also of the feel change that happens here... It has a classic VH
vibe to it, and I specifically counted out the very ending to be to VH specs...
There are some times as many as 6 beats between chord hits.. VH usually
works with sets of 6 and 2 for endings.. However, some live stuff is done with
odd 5 count rests and such... But this one is pretty standard spec par for
the course...
