Intro Be loose with this intro and the
entire track for that matter. It has a swing feel and it should
move right along.. See video for help with the details as well as a
hell of a lesson (in my opinion) on the subtle dynamic between the two
guitar parts on this track...

** This is the setup that I used for the whole track. That
being said, this is the only time these setup used photos will appear in
these tabs..

Kick
in and Main Riffing
This is real classic 50's
style stuff. I kept it pretty Stray Cats as far as how I recorded it..
Guitar 1 plays the low riffing and guitar 2 does either 1 octave above the
riff, or a power chord follow along rhythm.. Guitar 1 is in your left
speaker, and guitar 2 is mostly in the right speaker.. Just for reference
for you...
**The
slide in below in our lead in riff is done by sliding into the 1st fret from
above the Nut. So you start with an open 6th string, then side your index
finger over the nut onto the 1st fret to create a slide in effect from
nowhere...

Main
Theme riff
One of the things made famous
in the 50's by Bassist "Marshall Lytle" was the slap effect. This can
be heard on "Rock around the clock" quite easily.. It's almost what gives
the song it's sound..
Riffs like the one below need to
be played with a similar effect for them to sound right. Brian Setzer did
it best in "Rock this town".. It's not quite a double picking of the
notes, but the riff has the effect of it skipping along.
This is done by applying a muted double picking to each note in the riff..
To do this simply pick one note as normal and the other as an after-thought mute
with swing feel.
See the video lesson for help with this,
and more lesson...

also some practice playing in this style. Or at least playing correctly in

Solo
This solo is a mixture of
Brian Setzer style stuff with slight embellishment, as well as some
embellished excerpts from the "Rock around the Clock" classic guitar solo..
It's all great rockabilly practice. If you pair it with our part 1 Chuck
Berry lesson, you'll have some great double stops and riffing to use at your
next jam or recording session...
Take note of the chords above
the solo. The solo goes to "A". The chords over the solo are a
simple "A", "D", "E" chord pattern with accent hits. I didn't tab out the
rhythm because you can hear what's going on when you listen to the Jam Track.
The chord shapes I used under the solo are your basic power chord shapes for
these chords...
**Note
that this Setzer style opening pulls off to the 5th fret. For a more Brian
Setzer'y approach just hammer back onto the 8th fret. So in other words do 8-7-8
instead of 8-7-5. For our track I did it as it's laid out below...

Post
solo Riffing
The post solo riffing is just
our kick in riff beefed up on the drum end a bit... The drums are
doing Jazzy timing for this, so if you're unfamiliar with this sort of thing you
might want to play along with the regular mp3 song track for this lesson, BEFORE
you attempt the jam track. This will get you geared up for the jam track
and prevent you from coming in too late..

effect accent. Guitar 1 is important to the piece...

Guitar 2: Notice guitar 2 is
doing less, and it ends on a different chord.. It's the
blending of these two ending chords that gives the final chord hits their
sound.. If you were 1 guitar in a live setting and didn't have a second
guitar, you could end on an A7. However if you have two guitars in
a group, the A Major and A7 sus2 +11 ending laid out here will serve you
well, and will be more dramatic in a live setting. i.e. freak out your
audience more...
On the video lesson I refer to this ending chord as an "A9". I
apologize for the error. Go by the tabs below for the correct chord
name.. But in the end if I were you I would be less concerned with the
name of the chord, and more concerned with the concept that I describe on
the video for this ending...
Thanks, and sorry again for the minor error... they happen from time to time, we
do a lot of video and tabs around here....
