Intro

In this part 3 of Rockabilly by request from a number of people we're going to look at some of the Nashville influence in early rock music.  By using a song that in it's day was touted as one of the toughest guitar riffs.  In fact if you were in high school during this era and could play this riff, you were quite the stud or stud-ette as the case may be...  Little before my time, my time was more the Eruption and Ozzy eras of things...  Just the same it's a good style technique to know and will only help you as a rock or even a country lick player...

Some trivia for you as Hot Rod Lincoln the song itself is in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the main guitar riff is touted as being one of the more difficult in Rockabilly for many to pull off...  Most are familiar with the Commander Cody version from 1972..  That's the one that gets the most airplay.  However the song's origins are from 1955.  It was written by a guy named, Charlie Ryan and originally recorded by, Charlie Ryan and the Livingston Brothers...  So again as with parts 1 and 2 of our JFRocks Rockabilly lessons our roots are deep in the 1950's...

This is a Rockabilly classic that goes way back as you can see...  There's more trivia with the song but it's not as important as what I gave per say...

This song's vibe and main riff have a country feel to them..  A lot of these players from the Rockabilly era came from a Nashville background..  These guys were awesome pickers in other words..  With roots in Jazz and Country and a lot of them being Nashville studio musicians a lot of the riffing from this era and leads as I pointed out in part 2 with the "Rock around the clock" style solo are as difficult to play as anything Van Halen or his counterparts ever did.  Mostly because the riffing of this era in a lot of cases relied less on pull offs and more on picking.  Which is the least fun part of learning guitar when you're a student..  Many lazy teachers tell their students if they can't pick it to just pull off..  I say that sometime too, but to be honest you're not helping yourself as a guitarist by taking shortcuts...

The main riff on this track is a combination of Country style double picking and single picking..  This combo and change up mid riff is what makes it so hard..  The moment you get your momentum going with the double picking you have to switch up...

I did not alter the riff much, I only changed the ending measure of it, and opening note, but I didn't double pick the opening note for feel reasons.  I wanted to give it more of a solid jumping point...  I will show you the actual riff on the video lesson and also slow down both it and my own version for lesson purposes...

Even if you're into metal and hate rockabilly, which personally if you hate Rockabilly I think you need your head examined because it and surf music can only make you better at metal and especially metal riffing due to its Country influences and use of both double picked notes and half step interval riffs...  This type of riff is difficult for many rock based players who are not usually trained as pickers as much as pull offers and hammer oners...  LOL..  I'm making up words but this lesson is a great practice exercise if nothing else..  Do it slow at first then try to work it up to speed...  I'll give plenty of tips on the video lesson so no worries..  The tempo of our lesson track is 117, and the tempo of the Commander Cody track is 120..  I could not slow it down any further and have it still retain its vibe so it is what it is...

Basic setup used throughout.  Some compression was added to control the clean sound, but other than that there are no effects or delay of any kind on the track.

Main Theme riff

Repeats throughout the song..  ALL NOTES ARE PICKED...  I have not altered it much from the actual riff, and both my version and the actual riff will be shown to you on the Video lesson...

Vocal:  My pappy said son you're gonna drive me to drinkin'...  If you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln...

***Take note that in true Nashville form it's the 2nd fret that's bent to the minor 3rd of the E and not the minor 3rd bent to the 3rd as is often done to open rock riffs of this nature....

Main Verse part

Both verse parts are pretty much the same,
so what is covered below in tabs are mostly just the two separate guitar parts..  On the video lesson I will cover the sound effects and the actual dynamic between the two guitars...  The sound effects won't tab well so it's not worth bothering here in print...

Guitar 1:  In your left speaker is the main driving part of this riff...  It stays the same throughout almost acting like a bass...  While guitar two follows the E, A, B chord pattern to give us our melody....

Guitar 2:  In your right speaker this guitar follows the chord pattern of the verse which is E, A, B..  It's got a driving feel.  NOTE:  Doing blues boogie riffing here would be ok but it might be too much and would change the vibe of the section..  Keep that in mind, but also know that you can boogie riff this out when you use the jam track if you want to..
