Intro
This is a true holiday classic that's quite frankly been done on
guitar a Million times but for our JFRocks examples I've tweaked the
arrangement a little and added in harmonized guitar which harmonizes with a
blending of root notes and 3rds... 3rds always give a really cool
effect to things... There are many examples of this on the JFRocks
website and of course our "Lead Guitar 101" product includes a 40 minute
lesson on harmonizing but I'll cover it a little bit here on our Wreck the
halls video lesson...
Our JFRocks version is in the key of "E"... The traditional song
itself is usually played in the key of "F", but for rock guitar purposes
transposing to "E" works better for lead and rhythm applications....
We also utilize a 1/2 step flat tuning, hence the use of the White Kramer
for the song... This flat key of E vibe and the balls of the White
Kramer give the main guitar parts the guts I was looking for... It
should also be noted that our staff transcriber and guitar whiz kid Erica
Reese whom you've heard on countless JFRocks tracks and spoken intros to
songs is using a Gibson Les Paul for the harmonized parts.. Using two
different guitars on a track can really give it a lot of depth.. A lot
of bands with two guitars for example like to blend Strats with Les Paul to
get a similar off set vibe...
I'll cover more about the multi-guitar dynamic on the video lesson, no
worries there...
The tabs below are simply a lay out of the basic parts of the song and its
solo which has a Vito Bratta kind of vibe to it in most places...
There are some tricky techniques being used in the solo and we'll cover that
on the video as well...
Enjoy the lesson and have a great holiday.... ---
Jeff Fiorentino

Guitar parts are color coded. There are in actuality 4 guitars
going. Only guitar's 1 and 2 are tabbed, Jeff will cover the others on
the video and explain the tabs to you in detail so you understand how the
full song is played and comes together.
Guitar 1 is in Black Tab and is the main guitar
Guitar 2 is in
Blue Tab and is the secondary or harmonized guitar.

Solo
The solo is pretty much over a run through of the
verse, bridge and chorus parts. This solo
is a mix of techniques ranging from Vito Bratta of White Lion to Van Halen and
even a pinch of Jimmy Page for good measure.
See video for technique tips, some of this is a little tricky although as a
whole it's not a difficult solo. It's best with music like this with
strong melody to not over play. It's very easy to blow through scales and
arpeggios quickly and loose the melody. I've kept this solo fairly simple
for lesson purposes but if you want to on the Jam Track you can add in a few
additional runs if you like. BUT remember to not over play. Nothing
kills a melodious song with good vibe like a guitar player with too much going
on. These are the things that players like Vito Bratta can teach us.
The man did a lot but never over did. Remember the motto. "Sure you
can do more but why?"

**Use the side of your pick
instead of your finger for the slide taps in the section below... It's
where that big sustain comes from. This is a technique that's done
by Rhoads, Satriani, Bratta, and even Van Halen now and again although Edward
does seem to prefer to use his finger for most tap techniques...
