Lesson Notes by Jeff Fiorentino

This is our JFRocks take on the classic sung at every New Years eve party..  Not much to say except stay in the key of "E", and take note of both guitar parts.  They're both a great lesson.  I've jazzed the root chord pattern up, even when done under the lead melody parts..  The tabs should be color coded, however the majority of the transcription below is laid out as 1 guitar in a live setting, which should give you all you need to know in order to play along with the MP3, which can be accessed from the top of this page, the main holiday JFRocks page, or even the Jeff Fiorentino Music Downloads page.

Enjoy the song...

Remember to listen the song mp3 example a few times
before diving into the TABs.  The tabs themselves should be very easy to follow, in fact as always I suggest playing the mp3 in the background and scroll through the tabs to get familiar with them and their layout.  Enjoy the lesson, and happy New Year...

Auld Lang Syne
TAB Transcription by Erica Reese

Song Intro

Tabs are color coded:

Guitar 1 is Black TAB and is the Rhythm guitar & SOLO parts
Guitar 2 is in Blue TAB and is the main melody lead guitar.

*In some cases there is a guitar 3 however it is not tabbed out.  Notes are given to indicate whether guitar 2 plays 1 octave above or in the same octave as guitar 2.

Guitar 1:  Opening Rhythm, (a slight variation on the main rhythm of the song.  The chords are the same though, so remember these shapes.)

Main Song Kick in - (Chorus Part)

Rhythm chord names are written above the tabs.
Only the main lead part is tabbed out to allow for a 1 guitar in a live setting situation, and to make it easy for you to play along with the MP3....

Verse Part

This part is similar to the chorus and is the lesser known part of this song.
It's basically the same chord pattern, but with a slight variation in melody and feel..

SOLO

The solo is over the entire Chorus and Verse chord patterns.
Its 24 bars (measures) long.  I improvised these leads but as it turns out they're a great lesson on using the "Ionian" mode of "E" (the E Major scale) in place of some sort of shortened Pentatonic scale.  Make note of the positioning used and try to create your own patterns out of it..

The solo is laid out in its individual phrasing sections for ease of reading...

Post Solo Outro riffing

This is an in scale and chromatic power chord, almost Vh style ending for this..
It's basically built around the Mixolydian mode of our key and an ending chromatic walk up and is actually just a rocked out version of the chords that make up this song in many ways, although not as cut and dry as just power chording them out..
