Intro
There are 2 guitar parts to this intro.
It's loosely based on the theory behind certain sections of "Bicycle race".
The idea here is what I like to call "mixed harmonization". This is
more a recording technique as it's difficult for most harmonizers to do this
sort of thing, although some high end ones can come close to it...
Guitar 1 is the main guitar part, and guitar 2 is
doing a mixture of things. It's doing harmonized sections both 1
octave lower and off of the 6ths. This is a quick way to sound very
Queen. I love harmonizing off of the 6ths, however it's best to take a
lesson from Brian May and mix it up a bit and not do everything off of the
6ths, just certain parts that you want to be super dramatic with...

are some exceptions to the harmonizing with 6th's rule book that are going on

Main
Kick in Riff
This is an A Major mock up of
the Fat Bottom Girls riff. I threw it in for fun, BUT it's also a
great example of Queen style recording technique, combined with May style blues
riffing. There are actually 2 guitars here, but what's really important is
how and when the 2nd guitar is used.
I often say that ZEPPELIN is the
greatest 2 guitar band of all time (big joke since they only have
1 guitarist of course), but Queen is probably the greatest 3 or 4 guitar
band of all time. (bigger joke, since there's still only 1
guitarist).

Main
theme riffing
I was inspired by the current
"I want it all" Chase Credit card commercial that's on TV at the moment here in the US.
So I did a take off on that riff, mostly so that I could demo some cool
Brian May style accent leads and harmonizing. So this is a pretty basic
example as far as playing goes, but the lesson undertones here are huge.

The rhythm riff is pretty basic, but please note the chord shapes I'm using.
These are mostly 6th versions of common power chords that we all know and
love. This gives the riffing a very Queen-like feel. These are
not the same chord shapes that Brian May is using in "I want it all", but
they are good chord shapes to know for a Queen "style" of power chord
riffing..

Solo
#1
This is the shorter of the
solos, but this one here is a good demo of what the leads on this track are all
about. It's basically a Pentatonic minor thing, but during the second
half of the leads, the relative minor is used. Meaning the chord is "A"
and "F# minor" is used to solo with.
The other part of this as far as
the Queen lesson goes is timing, and sound. The sound incorporates Flanger.
BUT, if you really want to make it even more Queen-like add some Wah to it, to
make the Flanger twist even more. Another trick is to add Phase 90 on top
of the Flanger. This will give it some extra spin too. This is good
trick for those that don't like to fuss with Wah pedals.

Take note of the chords you're soloing over... IT'S VERY IMPORTANT!!

This is just an Embellishment
on the earlier mock up of the "Fat Bottom Girls" style riffing.
However this time around it servers not as a kick in so much as it does a
turnaround or bridge to more leads sort of thing..

This solo is partially over
the main theme riff, and partially over the "B minor" based chord pattern
that solo #1 was over. A key element of these leads are the scales being
used, and the shapes of them. Take special note of the chords over certain
solo sections. I'll do my best to point some of this out to you on the

*Transition
scale up
Guitar 1 = Main part - This transition
is over 2 hits of a "G" power chord allowed to ring out and then into a "B
minor" to begin the 2nd half of the soloing.
The scale is "G" Lydian mode. This is a "G Major" scale with a sharp 4th
in it. So the scale consists of the pitches,
"G, A, B, C#, D, E, F#"

Transition Riff
This is a break of sorts.
Brian May does all sorts of different kinds of breaks, from metal like the
one in Bohemian rhapsody, to ones like this one, which is a take off on the
break in "I want it all". Take note of the scale being used, and how it
relates to our key. These breaks in Queen-style things often lead into a
new thing. That's the not the case here, as I'm trying to keep things
simple for lesson purposes, but usually a break like this would lead into a
tempo change type part, or even just a whole new chord pattern to solo over.

Riffing was recorded twice.
Doubling something is a common trick used by Queen, and it's a good thing to do
to really give your riffing some depth when recording.

Outro
The outro of the song is the same as
the intro to the un-trained listener. However, the bass differs
greatly on the outro. Granted, the guitar parts are basically the same,
the bass part is moving downward this time, instead of upward as it's moving in
the intro to the song.
Little things like this, are
some of the stuff I've picked up from Queen over the years. There's far
more to a song track than just the song. As a guitarist, you can pick out
many little things going on in the background if you listen for them.
These "little" things matter a great deal, and if you retain the knowledge,
they'll help you later down the road when you're recording songs of your own,
and trying to re-use parts creatively throughout the track.
