Intro

I wrote this intro as a measure of 4 followed by a measure of 5.  In total it's a 9 count.

Turn around

These turnarounds as I call them are classic in this style of playing.  The trick is to know your drum beat and know your counts.  Usually the drum beats you have to follow are fairly straight forward, it's the rests in between that you have to be sure you count just right or you'll come in late or even worse, early.  That's embarrassing for a guitarist, early is worse than late.

I divided the tab below into sections.  Each section is 1 part of 4 different stop sections.

Main Theme Riff

There are two guitar parts here.  1 is playing a repeating pattern on the lower strings and Guitar 2 is using a pitch shifter to create a haunting melody off in the background.  We were thinking suspense thriller when we did it.

Tabs below are color coded.  Guitar 1 is Black and Guitar 2 is Blue

Guitar 2 below is done with a Pitch shifter, and the whammy bar is used to leave these pitches in limbo so they scream in terror.  I'll help you with this technique on the video.

Transition

This is a little Spanish style thing we went into.  This was planned but we didn't know specifically what was going to be played.

There are only 2 Guitars in this piece.  The Guitar 1 chord hits in the right speaker and on Guitar 2 I'm doing 2 parts at the same time, doing Eddie's technique from the intro to Little Guitars.  Only in a lower key for this track.  This whole thing utilizes the Phrygian mode in G minor.

As usual Guitar 1 is Black and Guitar 2 is Blue

Guitar 2

This is two things at once.  This is taken from Eddie's Little Guitars intro thing.   Our key is G minor, our mode is Phrygian.  Phrygian is a minor scale with a Flat 2nd.

Solo

This solo is probably a bit more abstract than what most of you are used to.  It is however excellent practice for any skill level.  This solo utilizes a mixture of modes to give it a mood all its own.  Even the VH style screams that are in it, are not in the typical places or even over the typical chords that VH would do them over.  That's part of what makes it so cool, I think.

This solo was a pain to transcribe because I did it off the top of my head and I had no video of me doing it, so I'm tabbing it from memory really.  The pitch shifter that I used is optional.  You don't have to use one.  The solo will work fine without it, simply crank your mid range EQ to suck some of the warmth out of the tone and you'll be good to go.

This is the type of solo you have to feel and just go with.  Anything goes, there are no bad notes, only weird sounding ones.  I didn't pre-think the scales I was going to use but I did know the bass line I was soloing over in advance.  Remember, like I always say, know what you're soloing over.  If nothing else you can use notes from the chords to build the whole solo.  I didn't do that in this case.  In this solo's case I just went off and since I knew the feel of the track, I tried to keep the solo in line with that.  I was going for a Bond movie feel with the solo.  Sort of a weird action scene from a James Bond movie from the 60's.  Not the newer bond movies, those are commercialized crap.  lol  I mean real James Bond movies.

__________________________________________________________________________

Bass under the soloGiven to help you understand what you're soloing over.  Take note of the pitches in the Bass part and how and or if they relate in any way to the pitches used in the Guitar solo.  I'm sure you'll find that they do relate in a lot of ways.

Solo ending

This is slick little riffing I've covered in other lessons in the past.  It's a Nuno Bettencourt thing, he loves this pattern and I used to see him do it all the time back East where I'm from.  Extreme was a local band then and this was one of the things I learned from watching his style.  I put my own twist on it and alter the feel slightly by adding in a note.  There are 7 individual tones in my sequence.

The Guitar goes up in what are called, "diminished intervals".  Diminished intervals are a minor 3rd or 1 step and a half apart.  That's 3 frets to you and I.  By contrast the Bass is doing a Chromatic pattern starting on F and going up to Bb.  These contrasts and having instruments not just follow one another and copy each other is part of how you keep a piece interesting to the listening audience.

Final Ending

Classic ending for this type of track.  Again follow the drum beats and try to keep it as tight as possible is the name of the game.
