Jeff's Lesson Notes

"The Gods that wailed"
A look at Metallica

This lesson's song track is modeled after several Metallica songs.  There's some of "The god that failed" in there, there are also some inspired parts from "One", and "Don't tread on me", as well as "Enter Sandman".  There's a lot going on here, and this song track actually took us a long time to do, mostly because of how much needs to be recorded to make it sound the way it does...

I doubt most people realize the amount of work that we put in to make these lessons happen.  I think based on some of the emails many take what we do for granted, and I know better, so I really have to thank my crew Kelly, Chris, & Mick the mixer for several long days of writing, editing, coding, and transcribing this lesson's song track..  That's not even counting the time both myself and Kelly spent on the video lesson..  So again a BIG THANKS to my crew over here.  It's been a busy month putting together Skin SCUBA from Vin Heuton, and this particular site update, but I gotta tell you I'm pleased with how all of it came out...

Speaking of the video lesson, PLEASE watch the video lesson for some additional tips.  I really need to point some things out to you in the tabs..  This style of music is also not easy to play.  I'm fairly well versed in it, since at the same time I did VH tribute bands I was also doing Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica in bands as well.  My point is that this style while made up mostly of power chords in many cases requires a great deal of right and left hand strength to pull off.  So if you're new to it and aren't used to it, please take it slow, or you might injure yourself.

I've done this lesson at as slow a tempo as possible for the song styles to blend..  Its fast parts are about 180 bpm..  Which is as fast as most double bass drummers can go smoothly with this sort of style.  This however is slow for me, since I'm used to working with awesome drummers, where 230, 240 bpm or more isn't out of their range with double bass.  But this song is a lesson and I didn't want to go crazy with it.  Maybe we'll save that type of speed for a Slayer style lesson another time.

I know my old drummer comes to this website, and I'm sure he's going to listen to the lesson and say, "180, pfff I could sleep that"..  LOL...   On the plus side though our lesson is a bit faster than Metallica's "The god that failed" which is what most of it is modeled after, so for you metal heads it should still satisfy and keep you busy timing wise anyway...

Speaking of timing..  This music is all about timing.  The stops in here are very authentic to this style.  I mention the drums a lot in these notes because I'm going to talk about the guitar on the video lesson.  But trust me this music is as much about the drumming as it about the guitar.  I strongly suggest, BEFORE you hit the Jam Track that you learn the stops and play along with the regular song track first.  This will get you used to it.

Enjoy the lesson.
