Intro

This intro is a mock up of the Star Spangled banner as done by Hendrix at Woodstock..  I changed up some stuff of course, but I did include some of the actual techniques employed by Mr. Henrdrix...  I'll show you some variations on the video lesson and explain some additional things to you about all this.  Most of it is tough to tab out...

**Tip**  The position of the first E chord is VERY HENDRIX..  One of the keys to the Banner is the opening B.  Hitting the 4th fret 3rd string and Open 2nd string together and letting them ring out...

X--X = a combination of whammy bar abuse, hand slides and random pull offs to open.  See video for help.  Whammy bar is optional by the way.  I did most of this track without whammy bar to accommodate those of you who use SG and LP guitars and things like that..

Main Song Track

This track is a mix of things, but it's really about the groove and timing.  Most of these artists that we look at use similar scales and chords.  It really is how they each use them that makes their styles stick out.  Part of what I mean by that is timing.  When you come in, and how you work around a groove.  This lesson example has a Classic Hendrix stamp on it.  Hendrix tends to groove IN the groove rather than around it as many other players do.  It's more Funk Blues Rock than it is anything else in a lot of cases...  See video for additional help...

Opening riffing

Be sure to build this up.  By the time you get to the chords at the end of this riff, you should be on the floor or on top of a table beating the guitar to death with the pick..

Main Theme Riffing

This is a take off on Foxy Lady and Purple Haze..  I'll explain more about this riff on the video.  Take note of the chords being used and how I changed them up within the riff...  Things are rarely static with Hendrix..

Dead stop -- Then into solo 1 below...

Solo #1

This is the solo that I modeled after the Foxy Lady solo.  It uses basically the same scale.  It's not much of a mental leap to take my solo below and twist it into the Foxy Lady solo, although I should note that the Foxy Lady solo would be 1 step higher in F#, and not E where this one is....

The main thing to remember here is the timing / phrasing, and also take note of the positioning.  This is very similar to how Clapton and other 60's guitar giants use this same scale...

Post solo break / Pre-solo 2

This part contains some new chord changes and an arpeggio riff that follows those chord changes..  Basically it's all just a big lead in to the 2nd solo, but it also helps keep the song interesting.  All I'm doing here is using the E scale to add my changes starting with the 2nd or the F#..

Also take note that Guitar 1 is doing the 9th chords this time, not Augmented 9th chords, and Guitar 2 the lead arpeggio part is doing 7th arpeggios, Root, 3rd, 7th....

Solo #2

This solo is modeled after the Purple Haze leads..  Take note of the scale and the positioning..  Also again notice the groove.

For these leads I added in the Pitch Shifter..  I doubled the sound 1 Octave above about 10% in the mix.  I could have gone higher but I didn't want to over do it.  It's not important either way.  However I suggest using the Bridge pickup for this solo and not the Front and Middle setting used for the rest of this song track and first solo...

Banner Ending

Be very loose with this.. and apply what ever feel you want.  Hendrix goes pretty crazy with the trills on this part.  I mellowed them out a bit for a general audience and for lesson purposes.  Just go off on it..  I would... :)

Final ending

**tip** 4th fret 2nd sting can be changed to the open 2nd string if you want to...  The 4th fret 2nd string sounds better on my setup, and so that's why I use it..  If you like the open 2nd string then use it..  Go with what works best on your setup..
