Intro
Opens
with pickup noise combined output jack noise.
Intro
riff
With
pick and front pickup if possible. If not bridge pickup can be used.
Slash uses the bridge pickup for the opening to sweet child o mine but I prefer
the milder tone of the front pickup sound, which is why I often take that route
with both my riff and his riff.
This
intro utilizes the "Dorian mode" a minor scale with a Major 6th. In this
case the C# instead of a C that would normally occur in our E minor scale.

Verse
This is part that's ripe for
vocals, but since we don't do that here, I decided to put some Slash style
leads in, I used more of a Slash acoustic guitar technique for these verse leads
than I did an electric style technique. Take note of the positioning and
the bent notes etc.
Guitar 1 is in Black and is
the Lead Guitar part
Guitar 2 is in
Blue and is the Rhythm Guitar part.

Solo
The chord pattern changes for
our leads. The chord pattern I used is a common one for Slash.
He used it on several tracks. This solo has an off beat feel to start then
when it kicks in it goes to a driving feel. The chord pattern remains
constant though. It's a traditional Em chord pattern, Em, G, Am, C, D.
This pattern in some form, like I said already has been used for leads on many
GNR tracks.
Notice the scale usage in the
solo. Compare what I tabbed to the scale lesson at the top of this page.
Also notice what note the solo is on when a given chord is in play. The
chords are written above the tab. That's part of the lesson here. I
assure you, it's not because I like leaving my cap lock on and typing letters.
lol
Rhythm under
the solo
Below is the
Rhythm Guitar part that's under the entire solo to this track. I suggest
if you play along with this stuff that one time around you be the rhythm
guitarist and then rewind and next time you be the lead guitarist. This
helps you to get familiar with your fret board and understand a little more
about the solos you're playing and hopefully writing.
These are just standard chords, leave
the chord shapes down and pick the notes tabbed out.

This is a close approximation of what I did here for
this lead in. Slash usually will do this sort of thing all on one string.
I chose to take you through the scale. You can add some picking to these
as well to keep them going. See video for an explanation of this
technique.

video.
Guitar 1 is in Black and is
the Lead Guitar part
Guitar 2 is in
Blue and is the Rhythm Guitar part.

These chord hits
are left alone and are designed to have an Axl like person do Axl like things
around then. Again, song structure and song writing is part of what I
teach around here.

Guitar 2 is in

This is
a classic Rock and Roll style Guitar power riff ending. Usually
these types of endings begin on the 5th of the last chord in the song. In
the case of our track here the last chord in the song is "G" and our power chord
pattern starts on the 5th of that "G" which is "D".
The scale you choose to use is
up to you. Just do what sounds good to you. You know what sounds
good, just tinker around. I went with a GNR sounding ending because this
is a GNR lesson.
The scale I used consists of
the pitches, D, C, G#, G, F, E. There are endless combinations
of notes you could do for something like this,
See video for extra tips.
