This track has many over dubs on it.  That's sort of the point of it, because it wouldn't be much of a Boston Style lesson if it didn't.  I have divided and color coded each Guitar part.  See my explanation below.

Guitar 1:  All main Guitar parts, this is what 1 guitar in a live setting would probably play.  (BLACK)

Guitar 2:  Harmonized leads, this is the background guitar.  This guitar part is complimentary to Guitar 1 in most cases.  (BLUE)

Guitar 3:  Rare, I really did this with 2 Guitars to keep it workable as a lesson, if applicable it will be the color.  (GREEN)

Intro part 1

On Acoustic guitar if possible or clean electric

Guitar 1:  Use a pick  for this and be very loose with it.  No effects on the acoustic Guitar.  Just some light reverb.

Line above repeats with only minor variation several times.

Meanwhile Guitar 2 is doing space noises

Guitar 2:  Space noises are done with heavy reverb, delay and slide,  see video for help.

Intro part 2

Guitar 1:  Guitar 1 is picking a pattern with a clean guitar sound and Flanger and Chorus are in use.  Flanger settings aren't given in the setting table at the top of the page because the best sounding Flanger I could find for this Boston type sound was the piece of junk Flanger that's built into my Crate GFX 212.  I just turned the knob to Flanger and set the level at 5.5 and kept all of my other effect on with the settings give earlier.

Main harmonized theme riff / Kick in

Couple things to remember here.  First off, Guitar 1's part can stand alone.  Guitar 2's part will sound nothing like the track and even a little bad all by itself.  This is because it's an accompaniment and not actually the main riff.

A harmonizer wouldn't work for this simply because not all of the notes are harmonized off the 3rd and harmonizers have set rules they must follow.  If you were to set it for the key of E Major and tell it to harmonize off the 3rds, you would not come up with this riff.  You would actually need to alter this riff to suit the harmonizer.  That's more of a headache than just recording two guitar parts or utilizing the two guitars that may be in your band.

I purposely arranged this riff this way for lesson purposes.  Didn't want anyone cheating and using a harmonizer.

Guitar 1:  This riff can stand alone and is the riff as I recorded it the first time around before I overdubbed in the harmonized Guitar 2.

Guitar 2:  This riff is the harmonized accompaniment riff.  It sounds horrible on its own,  but when paired and played with the riff above at exactly the same time, it makes a nice harmony.

This harmonization is primarily off of the 3rds, BUT I have in spots forgone the 3rd in favor of what might seem like other notes.  But in fact are really just reversed versions of the 3rd.  For instance when Guitar 1 is doing a C#, Guitar 2 is doing an E.  C# is the 6th of the E, but E is the minor 3rd of the C#.  I'll explain on the video but it has more to do with chord shapes than anything else.

**Tip** If I were going to do this with my harmonizer instead of playing the 2 guitar parts.  I would clean up Guitar 1's part so that everything Guitar 2 would have to do would be a 3rd.  This would allow the harmonizer to do its job.  The drawback to that is that both versions of the riff would sound like crap by themselves.  You would actually need to have the harmonizer on to make it sound good.  The way I've done it here.  You can be one guitar in a live setting and get away with playing Guitar 1's part as a stand alone with no harmonizer.

Verse and bridge section

This is just good old fashion Rock and roll.  This what Boston does for the most part during their rhythm sections.  They are a good time rock and roll band, just like the very first track on their very first album says they are.

I'm not going to tab all of this but I will give you the basic chord pattern below.

Theme Riff #2

This one is exactly the same as theme riff #1 but it's doubled in length.

The only thing that differs is the ending of it.  At the end just hit an open Position E chord and let it ring.

From the make space effect noises and go into the outro chord pattern, and outro soloing that is tabbed below.

Outro chord pattern

This is all Guitar 1, and it's done with a pick and a mild over drive setting on your Electric GEETAR.  The actual chord pattern that Boston does is similar but off of a D and not an E as I'm doing it.  It's a classic chord pattern for this band and they actually use it on several songs.

Outro Soloing

ALL SOLOING IS OVER THE OUTRO CHORD PATTERN GIVEN ABOVE !!

There are up to 4 guitar parts below.  I will focus on 3 main ones simply because the 4th is something I threw in as a thickener for Guitar 1.

Guitar 2's and or 3's parts are color coded and are below guitar 1.  If all you want to do is Guitar 1 then just play the Black TAB.  All soloing below is separated into the sections of soloing that you hear on the mp3.  This should be very easy to read but just the same I'll walk you through it on the video lesson of course.

Guitar 1:  Opening soloing section.  Guitar 1, 2 and 3 are all played at the exact same time.
