Intro The intro is the only part of this
song that uses a capo. Little Fighter itself is done with a
transtrem system and is usually transcribed in the open position, but to
match the CD pitch a capo is needed on the 2nd fret.
What I've done here is only used the capo for the
intro, and kept the main song in the pitch of F# but riffed it out with no
capo.

Frets indicated in the
tabs below are what they are. If it says 4th fret, I mean the 4th
fret. However because of the capo, all open strings "0" assume the
capo is on the 2nd fret. If you're confused (as many are by capos)
please be sure to watch the video lesson for a quick explanation of what I
mean.
* I went with a Jazz feel with this.
It's a little more a mix of Pink Floyd and Dire Straits than it is Vito,
but I thought it sounded cool, and it's a great Embellishment example for
the Little Fighter intro I think.

Main Song
Main theme riff (version 1) - REMOVE YOUR CAPO -
NO CAPO ON THIS PART
This is a really
embellished version of the Little Fighter main riff. It's hard to
embellish on perfect riffs. The Little Fighter main theme riff itself
is awesome. I tried to not mess with awesome too much here. I
just added a new off beat to part of it, and made it walk a little more.
Be sure to add some
semi-harmonic to the notes in this riff. See video for help of course.

Main
song kick in - Verse - Main theme riff (version 2)
This may sound to most like
the same riff that's done above as a stand alone,
but actually it's a little different. This
is for a couple reasons, not the least of which being making the riff a bit more
vocal friendly.
Granted we don't put vocals on
our stuff here, however that's more of a time issue than anything else.
The truth is my lessons are all about me teaching you how to be a knowledgeable
musician. Knowing how to arrange a song, or re-write a riff to suit vocals
is one of the skills I teach here, and it's a skill you need to have. You
won't be of much good to anyone in the music industry, or as a local studio
player in your hometown if you don't know how to work around vocalists.

Bridge #1
Basically what's going on
here is the breaking up of chords into riffed out arpeggios. But a lot
of players do that. To keep it sounding "Vito", the best thing to do is to
make the notes sing. Treat them like vocal lines rather than some sort of
arpeggio repeating pattern. Also whether it's indicated in the tabs or not
be sure to add in some artificial harmonics in random places. Usually with
Vito the 2nd string notes are great to add some harmonic scream to as you riff
along...

Pre-solo interlude
Not unlike VH and other bands
from the 80's White Lion often took their solos in new directions.
This was usually done by creating a new chord pattern or riff under the solo.
This is the case here and with Little Fighter. The key stays the same but
the chords change up a bit.
This whole part is simply here
to gear everyone up for the solo. Sort of a calm before the storm.
It also ties the solos chord pattern to the rest of the song too. It's
best when songwriting to not have your audience fall off a cliff into your solo.
It's great to take leads in new directions, but it'll be far more dramatic if
you walk your audience to it rather than thrown them into it. White Lion
and Vito Bratta were masters at doing this with their solos...

Guitar 1 = Black Tabs Main Guitar part and is semi
clean with a single coil pickup.

Solo
This solo is fairly tricky.
Not so much because it's fast, it's not really all that fast per say...
It's tricky because it makes no sense in tabs, and to make matters worse as
usual with Vito's style notes come out of nowhere and seem to just happen..
Vito Bratta uses taps
differently than Edward does. (see this lesson's notes page
for more on this topic)
I'm going to demo this solo on
the video for you, and I'm really going to break down the techniques for you..
This isn't about me doing a bunch of taps and saying whoo hooo look what I can
do.. It's really about me showing you how to do them so that you can
expand your tap technique beyond just triplets and sextuplets. Vito is
very musical with his taps, so that being said the guitar is played more like a
piano.
I often talk about string
control.. Never is it more important than when attempting some White Lion
sounding thing. There is only 1 Vito Bratta, and thank god he came around,
because I know his techniques gave me countless ideas beyond Van Halen on how to
use taps creatively in solos and rhythmic fills or riffs...

Notes
in parenthesis ( ) are to be tapped. An h before it h( )
means it's a tap harmonic. Notes in italic are never picked. See
video for help with these tabs and techniques...

Post
solo riffing
I decided to do this like the
pre kick in, and not like the intro. Frankly I like the riff.
Not as much as I like the little fighter riff, but that one was already taken.
I didn't want to do the generic thing of going back into the intro. I did
add some bass hits to this section though to give it some additional drive over
what it has at the beginning of the song where it's a stand alone riff...

Final song ending riffing
This is an Embellishment on
what's going with the ending to Little Fighter.. This of course is my
version for our track here, and because there's no capo in play or transtrem as
the case may be, you'll need to be very quick to do this as there are no open
strings. But it's a great example of how Vito might turn a single note
riff into double stops. This is also a technique that we covered on the
Vito Bratta part 2 lesson by the way...
