Lesson
Notes from Jeff Fiorentino
This lesson could be viewed as a bonus
lesson to our popular "Blue
Album" Blues 101
Guitar Lesson Product... I covered a couple "open tunings" on
that product but I left out the "Open E" which used here on this track and
its lesson..
There's a lot going on with this piece.. There are 2 Rhythm guitar
parts, each tuned to a "STANDARD" tuning, E, A, D, G, B, E... They
both play roughly the same thing in the main song, with the exception being
during the intro, and mid-turnaround where rhythm guitar 1 plays a chord
riff, and rhythm guitar 2 plays a single note riff 1 octave higher..
The slide guitar leads are done with an "Open E" tuning, E, B, E, G#, B, E.
This is a great lesson for Open E because many people assume that you use an
open tuning the correlates with the key of the song.. I.e. if the song
is in "E" you use an open E, if the song is in D you use an open D..
This is not the case at all, in fact it's only the case 60% of the time at
best.. The reality is each open tuning gives the guitar a certain
tone, or sound.. I used open D on "The Blue Album" for a track lesson
called "Train done run me down".. I used open D for that track because
the open D tuning is a classic Delta Blues tuning that is usually used for a
Train feel kind of Mississippi type feel... It's an eerie sounding
tuning...
Our song example for this lesson on the style of the Allman Brothers is in
the key of "D".. Yet, I'm using an open E tuning for a couple reasons.
The first reason is that the song example is modeled after "Statesboro
Blues" by the Allman Bros. band and they use an open E.. The other
reason is much deeper than that.. The open E delivers the type of
Blues sound I want for a track like this one.. Open E is probably the
most common open tuning.. It's the one your guitar teacher would
probably give you to take home a slide blues lesson.. Like most open
tunings it allows you to play in positions quite easily, but because the
6th, 2nd, and 1st strings are the same pitches you're used to with a
standard tuning, it makes finding positions and pitches much easier for most
people.. In other words the open position would be in E.. The
3rd position would be in G, and as with our song here the 10th position is
in, you guessed it, "D"..
See the scale lesson below for an example of the scale I'm working
with for the leads on this track.. Take note that the scale below is a
position based scale for our key of "D".. Be aware however that
you can move this scale around the fretboard for different keys, i.e. move
it down 1 whole step for slide Blues playing in the key of "C", or up
1 whole step for the key of "E" etc...
Common "D" Blues Scale for Open E Tuning -
(9 Scale Tones) - Tuning open string pitches = E, B, E, G#, B, E
Pitches - D, E, F, F#, G, A, B, C, C#... (Notice this scale
contains both the minor 3rd, & 3rd, as well as the minor 7th, & the Major 7th)
Be aware that as you look at the
tabs for the slide leads on our song example, I used notes outside of this
basic scale to create tension in spots... However this is a great
scale pattern to memorize for slide with an Open E tuning.. My
suggestion is that you view this scale which is a "D" Blues scale with the
10th fret as the anchor point, or main root fret position with all of the
other frets encircling it.. In other words even though the scale is
laid out starting on the 8th fret 6th string, that's just for tabbing
purposes.. The focal point of this scale is anything on the 10th
fret.. You'll see in our song that the 10th fret is really the root of
all the slide leads.. Doing an open tuning generally works great for
slide because it puts everything all in a row making for some easier slide
work than with a standard tuning...
**Scale is
laid out logically for usability.. The pitches of each note are in "Red"
next to the tab fret numbers...

Enjoy the lesson, definitely watch the video lesson for this for some
valuable tips, and be sure to listen to the song example a few times before
diving into the tabs and video.. The tabs are laid out quite nice for
ease of following along so they shouldn't be a problem for anyone.. I
used a couple actual segments from The Allman's Statesboro Blues, but I also
switched things up in places with some improv of my own in an effort to give
some additional lessons on this very important tuning and slide in
general....

Setup Breakdown

The Mashall JCM 800 was the amp used for all
guitar parts..

The Les Paul with a Standard tuning was used for all Rhythm parts and
the "Dickey Betts" style Solo

I used a Humbucker Pickup on my Custom Strat with an Open E tuning for all
Slide Leads.
Ideally the Les Paul would work best, but I personally prefer to play slide
on my Strat...

Main
Song Basic Rhythm Structure
The main rhythm in this song is a basic 12 bar Blues structure with 5th 6th
boogie riffing (see tabs).. I altered it from the Allman
Bros. song by not returning to the "A" for a turnaround at the end.. In
our lesson example we hold the "D" for an extra measure...
Below in tabs I have simply laid out the basic chord shapes used rather than
waste space tabbing out the entire rhythm.. We'll cover this important
backbone structure of this song on the video lesson...

This is a non-slide Dickey Betts style solo similar to what occurs in the
Statesboro Blues song itself.. The solo was done with a standard
tuning and a Les Paul on the Front Pickup...

the "Dickey Betts" style Solo

Final Verse Slide Solo Riffing and Outro
This is a take off in spots on Duane Allman's slide solo in Statesboro Blues..
I've added some thing to it for lesson purposes, but in reality it's simply
a take off on the original song's kick in...
