Intro

This lesson is obviously loosely based on the "Satch" classic "Surfing with the alien"...  Not only is that one of my favorite tunes, it's easy to format into a lesson...  What I've done with the song track is include several generic "Satch" techniques...  Including but not limited too modal use, scale patterning, screams, and tap techniques..  We'll cover techniques and guts of this lesson on the video segment of course but for starters here let me give you a few "theory" pointers...

First off as with any song this could be looked at several different ways, and the way I'm structuring this lesson may not be how Joe himself would view it from the theory perspective, or even how many others might..  I always try to give things to you in a way that "I think" will make the theory easy for any of you to use the real world in real life jam situations, rather than spout off a bunch of big words to stroke my own ego.. LOL..  The fact is Joe Satriani's writing process may be totally off from this lesson.  But for lesson purposes my explanation of what "I" did with "our" embellishment is a good way for a lot of you to see how and why this song and songs like it sound the way they do to the listener as far as the mood they convey...

For our song "Surfing with aliens" we're in the key of "G minor", with the primary scale being the "G" Aeolian (minor) scale, which is:  G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F.  However in many places and at the Bridge we move to the "G Dorian mode" by using the "Em" chord as our root for the bridge for example.  Dorian is the G minor scale but the 6th note in the scale is from the G Major, meaning the "Eb" from the G minor scale becomes an "E" making the scale.. G, A, Bb, C, D, E, F...  So anywhere in the main theme that you see an "E" instead of an E flat you know that "Dorian" is being utilized, be it in the rhythm or in the lead.

This change in mode is precisely how Joe and guitarists like him create "moods" with their music.  And it's the same type of things we talk about on dozens of JFRocks lessons all over the website and its products..  Not to mention mastery of these basic modes is the whole premise of the "Soloing 101 part Deux" "Mastering the Fretboard" product which will be released in late January or early February of 2010...  It's really important to understand how and why to use modes if you want to move away from being stuck in the "Blues Box".

For players like Joe, these modal changes are very intentional.. They're not taking shots in the dark, they know what they're playing, in many cases while they're playing it, unlike many other songwriters who simply play what sounds good and hope they get lucky with the chord change..  Both methods are good, and both methods work and are taught here on my website, but this is not a what sounds good is good lesson by any means, it's a bit more advanced than that..  We'll deal with the solo on the video lesson as that does a more drastic jump in mode moving to the sharp 4th of our root key and then to the minor 6th of our root key..  This big change for the solo is done to create a vibe or mood, but also to take the lead in a whole new direction..  And from a songwriting perspective to have the solo stand out in a song that really is just one big solo...

Besides modes, we'll also cover "melody" on the video segment...  This type of guitar playing is all about understanding melody, which is a topic I cover quite a bit on the JFRocks website and even on many of its products..  If you were an astute follower of this website you would know that you can turn any lesson track on this website into a Satriani style piece by simply putting a melody on guitar to its basic rhythms..  In fact that's something I usually encourage everyone to do...

Enjoy the song, and please be sure to load the video lesson so you have a full understanding of what's going on with this track example so that you can create music like it yourself.....

The Tabs are divided into two sections...

"The basic rhythms"
"The lead guitar parts"

Both are important...  Leads are only a good lesson if you know what you're soloing over...  So don't skip the rhythms in favor of the leads..  That would not only be a huge mistake, it doesn't make much sense either since leads and rhythms are tied together...

Basic Rhythms TAB section

Main Theme riffing

Basic rhythm riff for the main song..
Please note that I'll cover the weird sounding intro on the video lesson..  Below I've laid out two ways this rhythm part can be played..  The 3rd fret to the 8th fret is the way it was played by me and this is similar to how Satriani plays his riff as far as I know, but that stretch can be a bit much for some, so I've also tabbed an easier way to play it and have it sound exactly the same..  I'll demonstrate both ways on the video lesson, but to be honest I prefer the easier way myself...

Solo Rhythms

Drastic sounding modal or key changes happen here with this solo
in an effort to separate it from the rest of the leads..  It's also mixed differently to aid with that as well....

Soloing is over "C# Phrygian", and "Eb Phrygian", then over the Bridge of the main song which brings us back to "G Dorian"...  However the leads themselves do not always conform to these modes, and in some cases the leads are utilizing the "Aeolian" and "Locrian" modes of both the C# and the Eb sections...  This effect can add tension to an already tense modal change..

Keep in mind as well that many would simply view this section as a key change, but exploring what modes are being used within the key change is a better lesson..  It's always best to keep asking questions and dig as deeper than just the superficial... That concept is never more important than when dealing with a player like Satriani or Vai...  Especially if you want to write songs along the same vein as they do...

Rhythm Guitar Final Ending Outro

The outro does the main theme riff,
however it ends with a couple diminished double stop hits...  Technically this ending is done utilizing the "G Dorian" mode due to the 2 pitches of the final double stop being "E", and "Bb" the E being the pitch making the G minor "Dorian"..  Really though it just sounded cool..  There wasn't that much thought put into it, and there are probably 20 different ways it could be viewed anyway...

Example:  Eo = E diminished

See video for help
and also please read the notes above the Rhythm tabs for this part for more info about what's happening here...

***Opens with more pick tapping....  Note also that the primary scale used is the C# Locrian mode...  C#, D, E, F#, G, A, B.

To save tab space and for ease of reading...  All of the taps are done on the 22nd fret anyway, so we only tabbed that tap once (22) ...  All that's tabbed below are the scale notes you do with your fretting hand as you tap the 22nd fret with the side of your pick...  Just keep the pick tapping on the 22nd fret quickly to temp...
